TI Introduces Smallest, Dual 200-mA LDOs for Portable Designs

2 mm x 2 mm Linear Regulators Simplify Power Design with High PSRR and Fast Transient Response

Apr 23, 2007

DALLAS (April 13, 2007) -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today introduced a family of dual, 200-mA low-dropout linear regulators (LDOs) in a 2 mm x 2 mm SON package for portable, battery-powered equipment. The low-noise LDOs provide high power-supply rejection ratio (PSRR) over a wide frequency range of up to 10-MHz, fast 160-µs start-up time and excellent line and load transient response, while consuming a very low total 90-µA ground current with both LDOs enabled. TI's new TPS719xx LDOs feature an active shutdown circuit to quickly discharge capacitors at the output voltage. Discharging the capacitors to zero during shutdown helps to manage power-up when sequencing applications. The TPS719xx devices are stable with ultra-small 1-µF ceramic capacitors, and leverage an advanced linear Bi-CMOS process technology to yield a typical dropout voltage of 230-mV at 200-mA output loads. The LDOs also use a precision voltage reference and feedback loop to achieve a three percent overall accuracy over all load, line, process and temperature variations.
The devices come in a 6-pin, 2 mm x 2 mm, SON package, which is targeted at portable applications, such as mobile handsets, digital still cameras and wireless LAN applications that require good thermal dissipation, while maintaining a small footprint.

Key Features of the TPS719xx Family:

  • Dual 200-mA LDO regulators
  • Available in multiple fixed-output voltage combinations from 0.9 V to 3.6 V, using factory EEPROM programming in steps of 50 mV
  • Low total quiescent current: 90 µA with both LDOs enabled
  • PSRR: 65 dB at 1 kHz, 45 dB at 1 MHz
  • Three percent accuracy over line, load and temperature
  • Active output pulldown
  • Independent Enable for each LDO
  • Low dropout: 230 mV at 200 mA
  • Fast start-up time: 160 µS

Pricing and Availability

The TPS719xx family of LDOs is available today in volume from TI and its authorized distributors. Suggested retail pricing in 1,000-piece quantities is $0.75. Evaluation modules of the TPS719xx, design application notes and TI's new Power Management Selection Guide are available through power.ti.com.
