New Camera from Lumenera Leverages TI DaVinci™ Technology to Deliver Higher Quality Intelligent Video Surveillance

Li Series of Intelligent Cameras are First to Market with Ultra-Wide Dynamic Range Sensor, Selectable JPEG and H.264 Compression

Sep 25, 2006

DALLAS (September 25, 2006) -- Heightening the effectiveness of digital video surveillance through camera-head intelligence, Lumenera Corporation has introduced a series of cameras that leverage Texas Instruments Incorporated's (TI) (NYSE:TXN) DaVinciTM technology to deliver advanced image processing, video analytics and a variety of compression techniques. The Li family of intelligent surveillance cameras targets security applications that demand preemptive measures in critical environments such as airports, border control and commercial properties. The Li045, Lumenera's initial intelligent camera to be offered with TI's DaVinci technology, is the first to make use of an ultra-wide dynamic range (120+dB) sensor, which overcomes the issue of washed out images in challenging lighting environments. This enables quality images in all situations to ensure that critical video is captured. Additionally, the Li045 is the first intelligent camera to market with selectable JPEG and H.264 compression to address user requirements for higher quality images or lower bandwidth to stream video data.
By harnessing the DaVinci technology-based processor, the Li series enables analysis at the camera head, relieving the network of loading real-time video to backroom servers. For a fraction of the cost of a dedicated server, TI's DaVinci technology allows the camera itself to run the full suite of analytics from ObjectVideo® OnBoardTM. ObjectVideo's technology allows users to easily define rules to the camera view and determine if objects enter a specified area of interest or simply appear in the camera view. These rules are processed within the intelligent device for real-time comparison to the video analysis.
"DaVinci technology provides a common platform that made it easy for us to integrate ObjectVideo OnBoard analytics and other third party algorithms into our next-generation Li series," said Greg Bell, vice president of business development, Lumenera. "The DaVinci technology-based processor's dual core also gave us greater performance, a lower price point and an advanced toolset that allowed us to get to market quickly with a cost-effective product."
DaVinci technology makes breakthrough innovation possible in digital media devices for the hand, home and car. DaVinci technology is optimized for digital video systems and includes DSP-based SoCs, multimedia codecs, APIs, frameworks and development tools. These integrated components are the industry's first complete offering of an open platform. Original equipment manufacturers (OEM) can create unique, feature-rich devices optimized with specific video applications in mind and get them to market quickly. Complementing DaVinci technology, TI offers the complete analog signal chain including high performance analog signal conditioning, audio and power products.
"Intelligent video surveillance will help increase the effectiveness of security systems, reduce loss of valuable assets and, potentially, save lives," said Yvonne Cager, video solutions business manager, TI. "We're thrilled that Lumenera has been able to maximize the performance of our DaVinci technology-based digital video SoCs to make this technology a reality today."
The Li045 is sampling today from Lumenera. The Li family of cameras will be available at unique price points and performance levels to meet a broad range of applications and custom designs will be offered as well.
