Texas Instruments and Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas Present Live Analog eLab Webcast on PCB Layout Techniques for Switching Regulators

DALLAS (September 27, 2006) -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) and Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas, the largest operating group of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT) will present a live Analog eLab Webcast for designers entitled "PCB Layout Techniques for Switching Regulators" on Wednesday, October 11, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. CDT (18:00 hrs CET). During the online discussion, TI analog expert Bill Klein, P.E., and eLab panelists Richard Garvey of TI and Pat Hunter of Avnet will discuss proper PCB layout when using high-frequency DC/DC switching regulators. Engineers are invited to register for the one-hour session at www.ti.com/analogelab.
Webcast panelists will address the need to move away from using a traditional 3-terminal linear regulator as system voltages decrease and currents increase in system applications. While this technique typically involves placing the regulator on the PCB, switching regulars are quite different. These new regulators typically leverage high-frequency switching techniques to convert one voltage level to another. The switching techniques create high voltage and current slew rates that interact with PCB parasitics and can cause significant performance problems. The expert panelists will dicuss proper layout techniques for avoiding design pitfalls.
During the lab segment, Klein and Garvey will demonstrate how to minimize parasitic components when laying out a PCB. They will discuss which traces create noise and which traces are susceptible to noise within a switching regulator. In addition, they will provide engineers with basic knowledge on the layout of a switching regulator, how to place and route the power train and how to control it. This will help the engineers avoid the most common problem of noise when using a switching regulator.

Analog eLab Engineers

Bill Klein, P.E., is the host for the TI Analog eLab Webcast. Klein is a senior applications engineer with the high performance linear division of TI. He joined TI through its acquisition of Burr-Brown in August 2000. Klein is the author of more than 50 magazine articles, application notes and conference papers. His experience as an analog circuit designer covers 30 years in fields ranging from mineral exploration to nuclear medical imaging.

Richard Garvey is an applications manager for power supply and DC/DC controller products in TI's power management business. He has 20 years experience in design and development in this field. Garvey earned an honors degree in electronic engineering from the University of Dublin, Ireland.

Pat Hunter is a technical specialist with Avnet's power group. He has been in the electronics industry for 12 years and previously worked as a design engineer. Hunter earned a BSEE from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
