TI Digital Signal Controller Provides Unprecedented Level of Integration for Complex Point-of-Load Applications

New TMS320F28044 Controller Handles Up To 16 DC/DC Converters For Only $0.32 Per Channel

HOUSTON (October 3, 2006) – Allowing power system designers to transition to software-controlled, digital power management using 32-bit digital signal processor- (DSP) based controllers, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) announced the availability of the TMS320F28044 digital signal controller targeted at multi-channel point of load (POL) applications such as telecommunications and networking infrastructure equipment, servers, laptop computers, and industrial equipment. The new F28044 controller is the industry’s only device to offer the ability to manage up to 16 DC/DC converter channels using a single programmable controller with 100 MIPS of DSP performance. At only $5.00 in volume, the F28044 device provides full digital loop control and system management for as little as $0.32 per channel. Single-Chip Solution for Multi-Rail/Multi-Phase Systems

The F28044 controller provides the performance and integration necessary for a single-chip digital solution for complex point-of-load power management systems. The F28044
controller implements up to 16 channels of TI’s unique high-resolution pulse width modulation (HRPWM) technology, each with 150 pico-second(ps) resolution and is based on the fully programmable TMS320C28x™ 32-bit DSP core. Also integrated into the F28044 device are a high-speed 12-bit analog to digital converter (ADC), 128KB of flash memory, and multiple communications ports with support for the PMBus™ interface.

The programmability of the F28044 controller allows designers to build intelligence into power supply systems and simultaneously manage in real-time the sequencing, margining, phase compensation, and transient response of multiple DC/DC converters. The combined high performance of the F28044 controller and the integrated HRPWM channels provide the full digital loop control and output accuracy necessary at switching frequencies over 1MHz.

Since a single F28044 device performs all of the loop control, sequencing, system management, and communications for up to 16 DC rails, designers can eliminate all of the individual analog converters, standalone sequencing chips, and communications microcontrollers (MCUs) previously used in these complex point of load applications, resulting in significant cost savings.

Controller Sampling Today With Hardware and Software Tools To Ease Development

Samples of the F28044 controller are available today with volume production in the first quarter of 2007. Pricing for the F28044 will be as low as $5.00 for high-volume applications.
The TMS320F28044 eZdsp Starter Kit (TMDXEZS28044) development platform support the F28044 controller and is available for $495 from TI’s authorized distributors and on the web at www.ti.com/f28044ezdsp. The eZdsp kit includes hardware tools and TI’s comprehensive Code Composer Studio™ integrated development environment (IDE) to get designers programming the F28044 quickly and easily. Along with the F28044 eZdsp, TI also offers a low cost DC/DC module from Tier Electronics, a leading TI third party. This hardware platform, available for $295 directly from Tier at www.tierelectronics.com is targeted for dual phase-shifted full-bridge topologies and connects easily to F28044 eZdsp development kit.

TI also offers an extensive array of free system and application software including the TMS320C2000™ digital power software (DPS) library that provides reference software for major functions used in a variety of power supply applications. This free, fully documented software is written in optimized C code and helps engineers new to digital control of power supplies more easily translate their analog experience into the digital realm. DPS library components available today include two-phase boost power factor correction (PFC), multi-channel DC/DC conversion, and a single-phase DC/AC inverter with additional software components to be added.
