INTERNET TELEPHONY® Magazine's 2005 "Product of the Year" Award Goes to Texas Instruments Digital Media Processor

TI's TMS320DM642 Digital Media Processor Honored for Outstanding Innovation, Performance and Ability to Bring High Definition Support to the Videoconferencing Market

Feb 27, 2006

HOUSTON (Feb. 27, 2006) - Affirming its leadership in the videoconferencing market, Texas Instruments (TI) (NYSE: TXN) announced today that Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC®)'s INTERNET TELEPHONY® magazine (www.itmag.com) has named TI's TMS320DM642 digital signal processor (DSP)-based digital media processor as a recipient of a 2005 Product of the Year Award. INTERNET TELEPHONY, the leading VoIP Authority since 1998, cites TI's 720 MHz DM642 as being the highest performance digital media processor in the market today-allowing customers to integrate triple-play products on a single DSP, deploy innovative, digital media based products that offer real-time video over IP, as well as having the performance to handle both standard definition and high definition (HD) support. In essence, the DM642 provides the foundation required to bring HD video and audio to the videoconferencing market and allows original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to develop and launch scalable systems faster. "With expected growth of more than $2 billion by 2008, an HD roadmap is a top priority for TI and an important capability to offer to our video telephony customers. As the number one provider of silicon to this market, video telephony customers have adopted the DM642 DSP for their HD-based system designs," said Pradeep Bardia, marketing manager, video solutions, TI. "We are very pleased that INTERNET TELEPHONY has recognized our technology as one of the best in the industry."
Initially offering 1280 x 720 resolution, HD videoconferencing will address many existing problems users have faced with previous videoconferencing technology, such as reduced image resolution, poor sound quality, excessive set-up complexity and limited bandwidth and processing resources. Volume production 720 MHz DM642 digital media processors have the integrated I/O and streaming capabilities to develop high-definition systems, and TI's knowledgeable third-party network supplies the necessary software for compressing and decompressing both audio and video technologies. These capabilities will equip OEMs with the development tools needed to satisfy the high standards consumers have come to expect in HD systems.
"Each year INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine bestows its Product of the Year awards on companies that have demonstrated excellence in technological advancement and application refinements. TI has demonstrated to the editors of INTERNET TELEPHONY that its products or services are committed to quality and innovation while addressing the real needs in the marketplace," said Rich Tehrani, group publisher and editor-in-chief of INTERNET TELEPHONY.
The Product of the Year Award winners for 2005 will be highlighted in the January and February 2006 issues of INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine.
