TI introduces 52-V boost controller for industrial and battery-powered systems

Current mode controller, new LDOs simplify power management design

Jun 17, 2008

DALLAS (June 17, 2008) - Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) introduced today a 4.5-V to 52-V wide-input voltage boost controller, intended for industrial and battery-powered applications where the output is a regulated current instead of a regulated voltage. In addition, TI launched two integrated low-dropout (LDO) regulators with internal protection circuits that simplify power design for industrial systems.

TI's new TPS40210 non-synchronous DC/DC controller with current mode control supports design configurations that require a grounded source N-channel FET, including boost, flyback and SEPIC topologies. The integrated device provides programmable soft start and several over-current protection features, including a current feedback threshold mechanism in the control loop. Low-noise 20-V LDOs with ultra-fast transient response

TI also introduced the TPS7A4501 and TL1963A LDOs that support input voltages up to 20-V and generate up to 1.5A output current with very low output noise. The LDOs are aimed at applications where low-voltage operation and good transient response are important, such as low-voltage logic and RF power supply applications.

The TPS7A4501 LDO is capable of dropout voltage down to 300mV, and provides low noise (35 uVrms at 10 Hz to 100 kHz) and an operating quiescent current at 1mA. The TPS7A4501 has an adjustable input voltage of 1.21-V to 20-V. See: www.ti.com/tps7A45xx-pr. The TL1963A is similar to the TPS7A4501, but provide a low dropout voltage of 340 mV with a 1.5A output current. See: www.ti.com/tl1963-pr.

Available today

The TPS40210 is available today in volume from TI and its authorized distributors. The device is offered in a 10-pin MSOP PowerPADTM and a 10-pin SON package, and suggested resale price is $1.10 in 1,000-piece quantities. An easy-to-use TPS40210EVM design evaluation module can be ordered for $49. Suggested resale price for the TPS7A4501 and TL1963A LDOs is $2.50 each in 1,000-piece units.
