Complete Media Systems Unveils Single Processor Advanced Video Codec Set Top Box Using TI Technology

CMS500 IP/DVB-T Uses a Single TI DM642 DSP for MPEG-4/AVC (H.264), Windows Media(TM) 9 and MPEG-2 Video

Mar 31, 2005

READING and DALLAS (March 31, 2005) - Complete Media Systems Ltd (CMS) and Texas Instruments (TI) [NYSE: TXN] today announced that CMS has chosen TI's TMS320DM642 digital media processor for its new CMS500 set top box, supporting both Internet Protocol (IP) and DVB-T networks.
Targeting a wide range of advanced video-on-demand and broadcast streaming services, the CMS500 delivers high quality video supporting full D1 resolution at 30 frames per second on the latest advanced video codecs such as Windows MediaTM Video series 9, H.264, MPEG-4 part 2 (DivX derivatives included) and MPEG-2. Based on a single DM642 chip the CMS500 responds to customers´ needs to reduce overall system costs, provides a migration path between existing video services and new IP services and provides a state-of-the-art set top box product at low cost.
The CMS500 set top box integrates ANT FrescoTM , the industry-proven, reliable and robust embedded HTML browser, for managing digital content and the user interface. Fresco enables quick and simple development of standards-based user interfaces for a more compelling user experience, which is a critical element for subscriber satisfaction and IPTV deployment success.
The CMS500 is software-based, enabling the simple addition of proprietary middleware and conditional access software to meet customer demands. It is currently in beta test with customers around the world and will be shipping in volume April 2005.
"The IP-TV market is moving so fast it is vital to have a product that can adapt with the changing needs of operators. The TI DM642 is a perfect programmable solution. It allows us to deliver a product that is software upgradeable in all respects - video/audio codecs, conditional access and middleware. The power of the DM642 allows us to run features such as multiple picture-in-picture and advanced codecs such as H.264 (MPEG-4 Part10/AVC) at a much lower cost," says Philip Smith, Chief Marketing Officer at Complete Media Systems.
"We are delighted that CMS has selected TI for its latest IP set top box design. Offering operators and OEMs a complete programmable hardware and software solution, including leading applications layers that support H.264 full D1 resolution on a single TI DSP chip, is a significant achievement. The CMS500 product shows the breath of capabilities TI DSPs can offer when they are optimized," said Arnaud Duclap, business development manager for TI's Video/Imaging DSP group in Europe. "In addition, CMS is addressing a key care-about from OEMs to reduce overall system costs with an affordable solution, a significant step towards operator deployment."
TI's DM642 digital media processors range in performance from 400 MHz to 720 MHz, giving multiple performance, price and integration options. Hardware, software, video codecs and middleware for the DM642 are available now along side hardware and software development kits to reduce the time to market for set top box designers.
TI provides a broad and scalable product offering to OEMs and ODMs, such as Complete Media Systems, that cuts time to market, allowing them to focus on their own value-added custom post-processing expertise. TI's aggressive silicon integration roadmap answers key customer concerns such as reducing the overall cost of the system while increasing performance and maintaining sustainable differentiators in their devices.
