TI Unveils Quadruple-Output Power Management IC for Portable TFT LCD Displays

Integrated Single-Inductor, Switch-Mode DC/DC Converter Achieves High Power Efficiency and Voltage-Regulation Accuracy

TAIPEI, Taiwan (October 11, 2004) - Supporting all power requirements needed to supply liquid crystal display (LCD) modules in portable electronics, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) announced today an advanced power conversion integrated circuit (IC) for portable, small form factor color displays. The new single-inductor, quadruple-output DC/DC accurately powers amorphous silicon (a-Si) and low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) displays used in smart phones, PDAs, portable DVD players, digital cameras and other portable applications. Available in a tiny 3 mm x 3 mm QFN package, TI's TPS65120 converter supports input voltages from 2.5 V to 5.5 V. The flexible device uses a single inductor to generate three display voltages, including an adjustable main output voltage (Vmain) range of 3 V to 5.6 V with load current up to 25 mA. This output is post-regulated to provide a low ripple source drive voltage for the LCD display, ensuring optimal picture quality. Further, the TPS65120 can achieve a positive gate voltage (Vgh) as high as 20 V at 2 mA and a negative gate voltage (Vgl) as low as -18 V at 2 mA to support the gate drive of the LCD panel. A unique pulse width modulation (PWM) control scheme is used to time-multiplex the inductor between the three outputs.
The TPS65120 provides fast transient response and maintains up to 83 percent power conversion efficiency for extended battery life. The high switching frequency allows the use of inexpensive, ultra-thin 8.2- or 10-µH inductors, allowing a 1 mm component profile solution. In addition, the circuit integrates internal current limiting for high reliability under fault conditions. The TPS65120 also features automatic or programmable power sequencing. A linear voltage regulator with a fixed 1.8 V or 3.3 V output is available to supply adequate power to the logic circuitry of the LCD panel.

The TPS65120 TFT LCD power converter family is available today in volume from TI and its authorized distributors. The devices comes in a 16-pin, 3 mm x 3 mm QFN package. Suggested resale pricing in quantities of 1,000 is $2.25.
