TI Delivers Highly Integrated Power Management IC for Xilinx FPGAs

New Triple-Channel Device Simplifies Design; Powers Spartan(TM)-3 Core, I/O and Vccaux Rails with Up to 95 Percent Efficiency

DALLAS (Oct. 5, 2004) - Building on recent advancements in analog manufacturing technology, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) announced today a highly efficient, power management integrated circuit (IC) for Xilinx´s SpartanTM-II/IIE/3 series of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The new triple-channel device significantly reduces the number of external components required to power a complete FPGA system used in consumer, communications and digital video applications. "TI's highly integrated power management solution simplifies power design for FPGA-based applications."
TI's TPS75003 device integrates two 3-A DC/DC buck controllers with up to 95 percent efficiency to power the Spartan core and I/O rails, and one 300-mA low dropout (LDO) regulator that is stable with a low-cost ceramic output capacitor for powering the Spartan-3's Vccaux rail or other low-power system voltage. Combining increased design flexibility with cost-effective voltage conversion, the device includes several unique features including programmable soft-start for in-rush current control and independent enables for sequencing.
The TPS75003 meets all Xilinx startup profile requirements including monotonic ramp and minimum ramp times. In addition to managing the power to Xilinx Spartan-II/IIE/3 FPGAs, the device can support other processors, such as TI's high-performance digital signal processors (DSPs), application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and other processor power supplies, including split-supply applications.

The TPS75003 is currently sampling from TI and its authorized distributors. Volume production is scheduled for the fourth quarter. Packaged in a low-profile, 4.5 mm x 3.5 mm x 0.9 mm 20-pin, QFN package, suggested resale pricing is $1.90 per unit in quantities of 1,000.
