TI Introduces Three New Full-Featured, Low-Power RS-485 Transceivers for Industrial Automation and Battery-Powered Applications

DALLAS (June 30, 2004) - Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) [NYSE: TXN] announced today three new full-featured, low-power 5-V half-duplex RS-485 transceivers that offer best-in-class bus-pin electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection of 15 kV. With an industry-standard SN75176 footprint and integrated receiver failsafe design, these products eliminate the need for external components and provide a rich feature set for applications such as industrial automation and battery-powered applications such as electricity meter designs. TI's SN65HVD485 and SN65HVD308x half-duplex transceivers are ideal for RS-485 data bus networks. Powered by a 5-V supply, they are fully compliant with the TIA/EIA-485A standard. The HVD3085E and HVD3088E are designed to operate with very low supply current, typically less than 0.4 mA, excluding the load. When in the inactive shutdown mode, the supply current typically drops to a few nanoamps, making these devices ideal for power-sensitive applications.

Key features of the HVD485E include:

  • Bus-pin ESD protection of 15 kV 
  • Signaling rate up to 10 Mbps 
  • 1/2 unit load - up to 64 nodes on a bus 
  • Bus open failsafe receiver 
  • Meets or exceeds the requirements of the TIA/EIA-485A standard 
  • Industry-standard SN75176 footprint

Key features of the HVD3085E and HVD3088E include:

  • Bus-pin ESD protection of 15 kV 
  • Low quiescent power:  Less than 0.4 mA in active mode, 1 nA shutdown mode 
  • Signaling rates up to 1 and 20 Mbps for HVD3085E ad HVD3088E, respectively 
  • 1/8 unit load - up to 256 nodes on a bus 
  • Bus open and shorted failsafe receiver 
  • Meets or exceeds the requirements of the TIA/EIA-485A standard
  • Industry-standard SN75176 footprint
