Vernier and Texas Instruments Make Data Collection Affordable with EasyLink™ for TI Graphing Calculators

Jun 27, 2005

BEAVERTON, Oregon - (June 27, 2005) - Math and science educators have a new, extremely affordable, yet powerful data-collection option. The Vernier EasyLink from Vernier Software & Technology allows students to connect sensors directly to a TI-84 Plus graphing calculator. By plugging EasyLink into the graphing calculator's USB port, students can connect to 36 individual sensors to collect measurements such as pH, force, dissolved oxygen, light, and more.

The Venier EasyLink and sensors are supported by the Vernier EasyData™ software application, that is pre-loaded on the TI-84 Plus graphing calculators. EasyData supports a variety of data-collection modes and sensors, and it greatly simplifies data collection in the classroom. It is perfect for use in middle school through college. The combination of EasyLink and the TI-84 Plus family of graphing calculators gives math and science educators a whole new level of simplicity in data collection and analysis.

"EasyLink is the perfect data-collection solution for educators who are looking for a simple, powerful way to get started with calculator data-collection." said David Vernier, co-founder of Vernier and former physics teacher. "With the EasyLink for the TI-84 Plus graphing calculators, students can use sensors to perform experiments in the classroom and in the field."

"In the classroom they can perform traditional experiments or engage in inquiry-based learning. Data-collection options in the field are almost limitless. With this equipment, students can test water quality in their local rivers and lakes, or they can measure force and acceleration with skateboards, bicycles and roller coasters. By making data collection so easy and affordable, learning can take place anywhere," he continued.

The EasyData software application launches automatically when the EasyLink is plugged into the TI-84 graphing calculator. The software is easy to manipulate by using the five graph keys located directly below the graphing calculator's graph screen. EasyData options are conveniently displayed in pop-up dialog boxes. Once data have been collected, students can use the graphing calculator's functions to analyze data or download data to a computer, using Vernier's Logger Pro 3 software. Vernier EasyData is also compatible for use with CBL 2™, the Vernier LabPro® and the CBR 2™ data collection systems.

Pricing and Availability
The Vernier EasyLink interface will be available in late August 2005 from Vernier Software & Technology and is priced at $58.00. The Vernier EasyData app for the TI-84 Plus or TI-83 Plus family of graphing calculators is currently available online and may be downloaded free.
