3Com Selects Texas Instruments' Voice over IP Technology to Power 3Com® IP Phones

TI's High-Performance Solution Enhances 3Com's IP Phone Portfolio

Jun 13, 2005

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. and DALLAS (June 13, 2005) -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) [NYSE: TXN] today announced that 3Com Corporation has selected TI's TNETV1050 Internet Protocol (IP) phone system-on-a-chip for 3Com's next-generation enterprise IP phones. TI's Voice over IP (VoIP) technology enables 3Com to create differentiated and innovative IP phones and expand its current portfolio into both the low and high-end enterprise markets.
This latest announcement builds upon the longstanding relationship between the two companies. 3Com and TI pioneered the IP PBX (private branch exchange) market with the use of TI digital signal processors (DSPs) in the first multi-line IP business phone launched in 1998. 3Com uses TI solutions to power its complete portfolio of IP phones.
TI's TNETV1050 offers 3Com a highly integrated VoIP solution and a comprehensive feature set with one of the industry's most robust acoustic echo cancellers. TI's echo canceller is designed to cancel acoustic feedback between a loud-speaker and a microphone in loud-speaker audio systems and voice-controlled systems. Furthermore, using TI's flexible silicon and software architecture, 3Com can map additional functionality into its IP phones as the demand for a particular feature or application emerges. Innovative 3Com phones also use TI's advanced Power-over-Ethernet technology to enable seamless delivery of power and data over a single, standard Ethernet cable.
"TI's high performance solution, coupled with an outstanding acoustic echo canceller, provides 3Com great value and differentiation for our IP phones," said Greg Zweig, 3Com senior product line manager. "TI's technology inside our IP phones helps ensure that our customers will have a solution with superb sound that can grow and improve, as their business needs evolve. This has been a fundamental part of our plan for IP phones since 1998."
3Com offers a total of eight IP phones to complement its 3Com® NBX® and VCX™ IP telephony systems, including the industry's first competitively priced Gigabit phone, the new 3Com 3103 Manager Phone. The 3103's Gigabit speed assures that a connected PC has the maximum bandwidth available for applications, improving efficiency and productivity. Additionally, the power inside 3Com 3103 Manager Phone drives a new graphics-based user interface that is intuitive to use and capable of supporting next-generation applications. TI technology is also used to power the new 3Com 3100 Entry Phone, a cost-effective IP alternative to traditional analog phones.
"We have been working closely with 3Com's voice team since 1997 and are proud to say that TI solutions powered the first product in this market and continue to power all of the 3Com IP phones," said Bill Simmelink, general manager of TI's VoIP business unit. "This extension of our relationship enables 3Com to build on its longstanding heritage of designing IP phones for enterprise customers, and truly capitalize on the growth of IP-based communications."
TI's TNETV1050 IP phone processor, based on the TMS320C55xTM DSP generation and an enhanced high-speed MIPSTM32 RISC core, is a complete system on a chip providing the processing power needed to support current and evolving IP phone standards. TI is the top supplier of VoIP technology and has shipped over 125 million VoIP ports to date for the IP phone, customer premise equipment (CPE) gateway and high-density infrastructure markets.
