The MathWorks, Texas Instruments Unveil New Tool for Faster Control System Design and Implementation

Embedded Target for TI's Control Optimized TMS320C2000(TM) Digital Signal Controllers Provides Automatic Code Generation and Peripheral Programming Support

HOUSTON, TX and NATICK, MA (February 18, 2004) - Providing embedded control systems engineers the ability to visually design, implement and verify real-time control and signal processing algorithms, The MathWorks and Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today announced the availability of Embedded Target for the TI TMS320C2000TM platform of digital signal controllers. Embedded Target for TI C2000TM controllers is designed for automotive, whitegoods and industrial control applications and features automatic code generation and peripheral programming support from SimulinkTM, and offers users a direct connection between the design environment and implementation platform. By enabling engineers to identify and fix design problems at the system level and easily generate efficient code automatically, Embedded Target for C2000 controllers eliminates the need for manual coding and verification methods, significantly shortening embedded application design cycles. Embedded Target for TI C2000 controllers enters the market at a time when an increasing number of engineers are using digital signal processing (DSP) based controllers with integrated peripherals in place of traditional microcontrollers (MCUs) for applications that require the execution of complex algorithms for features like sensorless alternating current (AC) induction vector control, current-shaped switched-reluctance control, or permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) servo control. Embedded Target for C2000 controllers is particularly well suited for control engineers designing systems that require DSP processing power for complex algorithms for motion and motor control in applications like automotive electronic power steering and integrated starter alternator, as well as passenger occupancy detection systems, industrial motors and consumer white goods.
Embedded Target for C2000 controllers works seamlessly with TI´s integrated development environment (IDE) through MATLAB Link for Code Composer StudioTM (CCStudio) and allows execution of CCStudio commands for analysis, debugging and automated code verification from MATLAB.
TI´s C2000 digital signal controllers are optimized for control applications with a combination of MCU peripheral integration and ease-of-use, and the performance of TI´s leading DSP technology. TMS320F28xTM digital signal controllers are the industry´s first 32-bit controllers with high-speed on-board flash memory and performance up to 150 MIPS. The F28xTM controller is the world´s highest performance control optimized digital signal processing core and offers a single-chip solution that is able to handle control system processing requirements and also replace control system host MCUs. 
The MathWorks and Texas Instruments have established a commitment to providing engineers with robust and breakthrough TI DSP-based products. This latest collaboration between the two companies has yielded the third in a series of best-in-class tools for accelerating system-level design and product development. In 2002, the companies introduced two DSP development tools, MATLAB Link for CCStudio and Embedded Target for TI TMS320C6000TM DSPs, which optimize software prototyping, testing and verification for DSP-based systems.
