Texas Instruments Creates Embedded JavaTM Competence Center Focused on Accelerating Java Applications on Mobile Devices

TI Builds on Success of Joint Research With INRIA With A New Center in Rennes, France

NICE and RENNES (December 4, 2003) -- Texas Instruments (TI) [NYSE: TXN] today announced that it has established a JavaTM competence center in Rennes, France as an extension of its effort to expand the availability of innovative wireless multimedia applications on TI OMAPTM processors and wireless communications chipsets. The center will open following a five-year research program conducted jointly with INRIA (Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique), that was focused on developing technology that will optimize the performance of Java applications when running on cell phones and other portable and converged multimedia electronics. 
One of the primary goals of the Java competence center will be to drive the transition of the research results into business reality, thus enabling the large community of Java developers an accelerated application performance when they port their multimedia applications onto mobile terminals.

Working jointly has enabled us to define a highly competitive approach for compelling new Java-based wireless applications on TI's wireless communications chipsets and OMAP processors and marks the next step in expanding Java capability of TI wireless system solutions," said Christian Dupont, European Director of TI's Wireless Terminals Business Unit. "This approach complements our complete wireless offering for mobile device manufacturers, embedded operating system manufacturers and application developers and will accelerate growth in the market for Java-enabled mobile devices."
During the initial research stage of the relationship, TI and INRIA focused on technology development that addresses the complexity of performance and power-hungry Java applications and optimizes their compatibility with the real-time constraints imposed by several multimedia applications running on the same mobile device. By combining INRIA's well-respected expertise in embedded systems software development with TI's leading wireless systems know-how, the two partners were able to efficiently solve the technical challenges of the research stage during which over 30 patents were being generated.

The core team of the new TI competence center is comprised of the former INRIA engineers and researchers who worked with TI on the original joint research program. The center will act as a key interface for TI's customers and partners in the Java application area and is located in Rennes to benefit from the close proximity to INRIA-Rennes for further joint research activities.
As part of TI's Wireless Terminals Business Unit, the center will be closely connected with TI's European Wireless Center in Villeneuve-Loubet, France, which has been the driver of considerable innovation in wireless communications over the past 15 years and which has seen a continuous growth in its number of development and application engineers. Today, the majority of TI employees in France are focusing on the company's solutions for the GSM/GPRS wireless industry.
The new Java Competence Center complements TI's existing relationships with strategic third parties working toward optimizing Java implementations on OMAP processors and wireless communications chipset platforms as well as delivering optimized end-to-end wireless solutions for 2.5G and 3G networks.
