TI Introduces 1.5A PWM High-Side Driver for Electromechanical and Thermal Devices

TUCSON, Ariz. (Sept. 24, 2003) - Texas Instruments (TI) Incorporated (NYSE:TXN) today announced a high-side, DMOS pulse-width modulated (PWM) driver from the company´s Burr-Brown product line. This integrated driver is optimized for controlling electromechanical and thermal devices such as valves, solenoids, relays, actuators, heaters, coolers and lamps. As a result of PWM operation, the DRV104 conserves power and reduces heat rise, resulting in higher reliability. (See www.ti.com/sc03207).

PWM operation also allows precise control of the power delivered at designated levels and intervals to the system. The DRV104 operates over a single +8V to +32V supply range.
"The rugged DRV104 offers customers a complete, fully-tested solution for high-side switching with the benefit of power conservation and increased reliability - all for less than it would cost a designer to build their own solution with an oscillator, PWM, control, drive, power switch, thermal/current protection and diagnostic flag," said John Brown, strategic marketing engineer of TI's high-performance linear products.
The DRV104 can be set to provide a strong initial solenoid closure, automatically switching to a soft hold mode for power savings. The duty cycle can be controlled by a resistor, analog voltage, or a digital-to-analog converter for versatility. A status flag pin indicates thermal shutdown or over-current conditions. Timing and internal oscillator frequency are externally adjustable. Separate supply pins for the control circuitry and driver transistor allow this device to operate on separate supplies, such as +5V to +24V.
