Texas Instruments Power Management Products Enhance Power Efficiency in LCD Displays

New Charge Pumps and Inductive Switch-Mode IC Integrate Power Management for Small and Large Form Factor LTPS and TFT LCDs

DALLAS (Sept. 21, 2003) - Building on its portfolio of products that enhance power efficiency in portable color displays, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today announced two new triple output charge pumps for small low-temperature poly silicon (LTPS) liquid crystal displays (LCDs) in handheld battery-powered applications, and an inductive DC/DC power supply for thin-film transistor (TFT) LCDs in notebooks and LCD monitors. These new advanced power management integrated circuits (ICs) will help designers deliver innovative small and large form factor LCD applications with improved power efficiency and increased board savings.

TI´s integrated TPS65110 and TPS65111 triple output power supply charge pumps efficiently manage the three bias voltages required in most LTPS LCD displays used by PDAs, smart phones and digital cameras. In addition to high efficiency, the 4 mm x 4 mm devices come in QFN packages and provide extremely low 5 mV ripple at 5 mA (typical). Further simplifying design, the TPS65110 and TPS65111 feature internally set power-up and power-down sequencing and require only small ceramic capacitors for operation. TI also introduced the new


power supply IC that manages all voltages required by TFT LCD displays in notebooks and LCD monitors. The


uses a highly efficient fixed-frequency boost converter at 1.5 MHz to supply the main source drive for the LCD display. An integrated adjustable charge pump provides the positive LCD gate drive voltage, and an external adjustable negative charge pump provides the negative gate drive voltage. For LCD panels powered with 5 V, the


provides an auxiliary linear regulator controller to provide a regulated 3.3 V for logic circuitry. In addition, the IC integrates the Vcom buffer to drive the display backplane. (For more on the

The TPS65110, TPS65111 and TPS65100 LCD drivers are available now from TI and its authorized distributors. The TPS65110 comes in a 4 mm x 4 mm QFN package and the TPS65100 comes in a 24-pin TSSOP or 4 mm x 4 mm QFN package. Suggested resale pricing in 1,000 piece quantities is $1.69 each for the TPS65110 and TPS65111, and $2.69 for the TPS65100.
