TI Introduces PROFIBUS Transceivers with Low Signal Distortion and Improved Reliability for Industrial Networks

New Transceivers are Fully Compliant with EN 50170 and TIA/EIA-485 Standards

Sep 11, 2003

DALLAS (September 11, 2003) - Supplying system designers with a new level of performance, Texas Instruments (TI) Incorporated (NYSE: TXN) announced today the availability of new PROFIBUS transceivers that offer low signal distortion and improved reliability. The SN65HVD1176 and SN75HVD1176 transceivers provide improved output transition skew of less than 1 nanosecond (0.2 nsec typical), giving system designers the ability to tighten up the total timing budget of their networked applications. HVD1176 also features high ESD protection of 10 kV and fail-safe for open, idle and shorted bus conditions, which are ideal for demanding industrial applications. (See www.ti.com/sc03190 for more information.)

"Among other reasons, Siemens chose the HVD1176 because it allows our designers to control the timing aspect of the automation process to a greater degree," said Manfred Sand, Siemens A&D AS RD. "The SN65HVD1176 driver output transition skew is so tight that it can be used for special diagnostic functions."
TI´s HVD1176 half-duplex transceivers are designed for PROFIBUS and RS-485 networks. Powered by a 5-V supply, it is fully compliant with the EN 50170 and TIA/EIA-485 standards. With low skew during output transitions and driver enabling / disabling, this device is suitable for signaling rates up to 40 Mbps over long twisted-pair cables. HVD1176 also provides excellent common-mode rejection up to 50 MHz and 1/5 unit load to have 160 nodes on a bus.

Key Features Include:

  • Optimized for PROFIBUS Networks:  Meets the Requirements of EN 50170, Signaling Rates Up to 40 Mbps, Differential Output Exceeds 2.1 V (54 ohm Load), Low Bus Capacitance: 10 pF (MAX)
  • ESD Protection Exceeds ±10 kV HBM
  • Failsafe Receiver for Bus Open, Idle, Short
  • Up to 160 Transceivers on a Bus
  • Low Skew During Output Transitions and Driver Enabling / Disabling
  • Common-Mode Rejection Up to 50 MHz

Applications:

  • Process Automation: Chemical Production, Brewing and Distillation, Paper Mills
  • Factory Automation: Automobile Production, Rolling, Pressing, Stamping Machines, Networked Sensors
  • General RS-485 Networks: Motor/Motion Control, HVAC and Building Automation Networks, Networked Security Stations

Available Today

The SN65HVD1176 and SN75HVD1176 are available now from TI and its authorized worldwide distributors in an 8-pin SOIC package. Suggested resale pricing is $1.40 in quantities of 1,000.
