TI's New 1.2-A DC/DC Converters Extend Battery Life in Wireless PDAs, Notebook Computers and Broadband Equipment

95 Percent Efficient Converters Supply Voltages Down to 0.7 V and Improve Run-times in Mobile Applications

Jun 18, 2003

DALLAS (June 18, 2003) -- Designers of portable high-performance applications with low-power requirements can increase system run-times and save board space by using new 1.2-A synchronous step-down DC/DC converters introduced today from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) (See: power.ti.com/sc03131).

TI's TPS6204x family of step-down converters enables an extremely low quiescent current of 18 µA and 95 percent conversion efficiency to conserve battery life in one-cell lithium-ion (Li-Ion) or three-cell nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) and nickel-cadmium (NiCd) powered applications such as wireless PDAs, smartphones, notebooks and broadband equipment.
The converters reduce board space by integrating all necessary switching transistors and operating at a fixed frequency of 1.25 MHz to help minimize inductor size. In addition, the devices are available in small 3 mm x 5 mm, 10-pin micro-small outline packages (MSOPs), allowing designers to reduce both board space and system cost. The TPS6204x series manages input voltages from 2.5 V to 6 V and supply output voltages as low as 0.7 V, ideally suited to supply the ultra-low core voltage of today's low-power processors such as TI's TMS320C5000TM DSP platform and other microprocessors.

Additional Features

  • Adjustable and Fixed Voltage Options
  • Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM)/Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Mode for High Efficiency Over Wide Load Current Range
  • 100 Percent Maximum Duty Cycle for Lowest Drop-out
  • Low Noise Operation in Forced Fixed Frequency PWM Operation Mode
  • Power Save Mode Operation at Light Load Current Levels
  • Short-circuit Detection

Pricing and Availability

The TPS6204x devices are available today in volume from TI and its authorized distributors. Suggested pricing in quantities of 1,000 is $2.09 per unit. Evaluation modules of the TPS6204x are available through power.ti.com.
