TI Introduces Low Power RS-485 Transceiver Ideal for Energy Meter Networks, Industrial Applications

DALLAS (June 11, 2003) - Supplying system designers with a new level of flexibility, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) [NYSE: TXN] announced today a new low-power RS-485 transceiver that cuts power consumption to less than 0.3 mA in active mode. The new transceiver features True Fail-safe Receiver inputs and 16-kV HBM ESD protection levels ideal for demanding applications in noisy environments, such as energy meter networks, industrial automation and telecom racks. TI's HVD3082E half-duplex transceiver is designed for RS-485 data bus networks. Powered by a 5-V supply, it is fully compliant with the TIA/EIA-485A standard. With controlled output transition times, this device is suitable for signaling rates up to 200 Kbps over long twisted-pair cables and features a True Fail-safe Receiver design that detects and corrects bus open, idle and short conditions. When in the inactive shutdown mode, the supply current drops to a 1 nA typical, making these devices ideal for power-sensitive applications.
