VIRTIO CORPORATION AND TI INTRODUCE FAST, FULL-FUNCTION SOFTWARE EMULATION OF TI INNOVATORTM KIT FOR OMAPTM PLATFORM

Virtio's Virtual Platform and Platform Development Kit Power Dramatic Gains in Developer Productivity

May 5, 2003

Campbell, California and Dallas, Texas - May 5, 2003 -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) and Virtio Corporation, the creator of virtual platforms for embedded software development announced today the availability of the VPOM-1510 Virtual Platform, a fast, full-function software emulation of the TI Innovator Development Kit for the OMAPTM Platform. VPOM-1510 delivers dramatic gains in developer productivity by providing a complete desktop environment for application, middleware, operating system and device driver development. The VPOM-1510 supports a variety of operating systems (OSs), including Symbian OSTM, Windows® CE and Linux®, as well as tool chains including Metrowerks´ CodeWarriorTM; Microsoft® Windows® CE.NET; Microsoft´s eMbedded Visual Tools for application development and Platform Builder, Microsoft´s Integrated Development Environment (IDE).
Shay Ben-Chorin, president and CEO for Virtio explains, "For Virtio, being able to collaborate with TI's OMAP platform, the leading platform for wireless handsets, is a significant milestone in terms of validating our overall product offerings and long-term company direction. The VPOM virtual platform will provide software developers with significant productivity gains in terms of control and visibility into the hardware that, in turn, will benefit the overall wireless software development process. The VPOM-1510 products will also enable developers to more quickly and readily incorporate new functionality into mobile phones, PDAs (personal digital assistants) and mobile Internet devices thereby providing a significant competitive edge for these products."
"For wireless providers, their market leadership is only as good as their latest product innovation," noted Ben-Chorin. "As a result, these providers are continually seeking solutions that will dramatically enhance and speed up their overall development process; enable them to differentiate their products from the plethora of other offerings and also enable them to keep pace with the demand for more functionality in increasingly shortened product life cycles."
Working together, TI and Virtio developed the virtual platform for TI's OMAP1510 processor to further enable development of OMAP-based products. Virtio offers two different product iterations of the platform--the VPOM-1510 Virtual Platform (VP) and VPOM-1510 Platform Development Kit (PDK). The VP gives the software developer control and visibility into the hardware to set breakpoints, single step and watch signals. With the VP, a developer can preset hardware configurations such as switch settings, camera source, and COM port settings to develop and test new software configurations to boot operating systems, run applications, or create low-level drivers.
The PDK offers the same functionality as the VP but adds the ability to customize the platform hardware by using components from the library of components provided or creating new functions by using the authoring tools included in the PDK. Using the PDK, developers can realize their entire system that incorporates the TI OMAP1510 processor in a matter of days without the need to create hardware prototypes.
"As the industry leader in wireless technology, TI continually searches for ways to accelerate platform and system development. Offering our customers a complete, fast, functional software emulation of our Innovator Kit adds to the completeness of the OMAP processing platform," said Paul Werp, worldwide director of marketing for TI's OMAP platform. "Now, with Virtio's technology as a significant contributor, we can better address our customers' entire product development cycles from OS to applications to processor platforms."
To demonstrate the power of the VPOM-1510, Virtio and TI have combined the VPOM-1510 with Metrowerks´ CodeWarriorTM Symbian OSTM.
D'Arcy Salzmann, wireless industry manager, for Metrowerks' noted, "As a software tools developer, we work closely with silicon providers to deliver early access to hardware technology to our customers. We have already seen the value of Virtio's technology in their Softboard product that is included with our CodeWarrior Symbian OS, OEM Edition, Version 2 (see press release, "Virtio Corporation and Metrowerks Join Forces to Provide Complete Development Environment, in Software, for Mobile Phone Developers," dated April 14, 2003). The VPOM-1510 is the result of all three companies working together to better address our mutual customers' needs."
"With the large deployment of TI's OMAP processors to developers of smart phone devices, any efforts that result in getting the hardware and software up and running together, in a 'real world' view is a significant achievement in the overall product development process," continued Salzmann.

Virtio Products

Virtio Platforms are complete models of embedded systems including processors, peripherals and user interfaces as well as connections to real world-like serial ports and network connections. Virtio offers three types of platform products: Platform Development Kit (PDK) targeted for developers that need the ability to customize the platform to match their embedded device, Virtual Platform (VP) targeted at software developers that need visibility and control of the hardware for integration and Softboard (SB) targeted at application developers that need the hardware functionality, but have no need to see inside the hardware. Virtio products offer software teams improved productivity by enabling early software development and integration through focusing on the top three issues in embedded software development-early access to hardware, complete visibility into the hardware for integrating software and the ability to control the hardware during software integration.
