UNITED KINGDOM and HOUSTON (December 18, 2002) -- Offering U.K. consumers a premiere gift this holiday season, Personal Telecom, Ltd. (Perstel) has now delivered the industry´s first handheld digital audio broadcasting (DAB) radio to retail shelves, based on the proven Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) Eureka DAB solution. (See www.ti.com/sc/dr3.)

"The Perstel DR101 is the world's first commercially available portable DAB receiver. Its launch represents a major milestone for the DAB industry and a considerable achievement for Perstel and TI technology," said Chris Patel, director of Perstel UK Ltd. "The product has exceeded our expectations, and we have received tremendous feedback from customers. TI technology enabled us to develop a battery-powered, truly portable receiver and sets the standard by which all the other products will now be judged."
"With TI's innovative solutions and Perstel's product design expertise, we have brought a professional look and feel to the consumer DAB receiver market," said Stephen Blows, technical manager of Perstel UK Ltd. "Weighing only 85g, the DR101 is extremely simple to operate and incorporates a backlit, full graphic panel display for clear presentation of information."
The Perstel DR101 pocket-sized DAB radio plays both DAB and FM radio broadcasts. The DR101 is powered by TI´s analog chipset for DAB and the TMS320C5000TM DSP-based TMS320DRE200 digital baseband, which utilizes software by U.K.-based RadioScape Ltd. Perstel also utilized TI´s DRE200 evaluation board and design support, enabling the company to reach the market faster with minimal development risk.
Perstel´s handheld DAB radio plays 6 hours of music on two AA batteries and is available on U.K. retail shelves now for £169. Visit Perstel U.K.´s Web site for a list of stockists at www.perstel.co.uk.
"Making DAB radios smaller and easier to use is so important in enabling market growth, and the Perstel DR101 does just that," said Naresh Coppisetti, manager for TI's Digital Radio business. "As a worldwide leader in the wireless industry, TI is bringing its low cost, low power DSP and analog chipsets to the DAB industry, driving growth in this burgeoning market."
The DRE200 digital baseband and analog chipset, evaluation boards for DAB and design support services are all currently available from TI. TI's DRE200 digital baseband is sold in volume quantities at $10 each.
