30 milliohm SuperSOT-8 and 60 milliohm SuperSOT-6 Devices Offer Advanced Silicon in True Surface Mount Packages

Oct 8, 1996

October 8, 1996 - National Semiconductor Corporation® sets a new standard of RDS(ON) performance through its release today of a new family of Power MOSFETs in SuperSOT-6 and SuperSOT-8 surface-mount packages. The unique, true surface-mount designs further reflect National's leadership in surface-mount DMOS.

The latest SuperSOTs consist of two categories: SuperSOT-6 devices are available in N- and P-channels, single and dual configurations, as well as complementary N-P channel. SuperSOT-8 are also available in N- and P-channels, and offer a continuous output current capability up to 5.8A. Both packages feature the combined advantages of National Semiconductor's high-density DMOS process with power-dissipating capabilities resulting in the lowest RDS(ON) rating in the industry.

"The thinner and smaller true surface-mount SuperSOT package design can significantly reduce board space and fit in systems with very low height requirements," noted Eric Kuo, National's marketing director. "Its performance is comparable to much larger packages, thanks to the optimized power package with a highly conductive copper leadframe," he added.

The SuperSOT-6 family, with RDS(ON) as low as 60 milliohms at 4.5V gate drive, (NDC63IN) achieves a level of performance only previously available in larger SO-8, Micro-8 and SOT-89s or multiples of SOT-23s. The SuperSOT-8 family with RDS(ON) as low as 30 milliohms at 4.5V gate drive (NDH831N) achieves a level of performance previously available only in the larger SO-8 package. By comparison, the SuperSOT-8 is only 55% the footprint of the SO-8 and the SuperSOT-6 is 27% the footprint of an SO-8 package.

By providing high performance in a small package, the SuperSOT family of Power MOSFETs is ideal for personal systems, mass storage, notebooks, cellular phones, lithium-ion battery packs, and other battery-powered portable devices, where battery life and board space are critical.

Price and Availability
Currently available from National Semiconductor, pricing in the 10,000-unit lot begins at $0.39 for the SuperSOT-6 and $0.69 for the SuperSOT-8. In addition to the current offering of 22 devices, National will release twelve new devices with even higher performance in the next three months.
