Takaoka uses Cyrix MediaGX? Processor in Japan's First Windows Based Terminal

Enables reduced network of administration, lowers total cost of ownership

Oct 7, 1998

October 7, 1998 - Cyrix? Corporation, a National Semiconductor Corporation? (NYSE:NSM) company, today announced that Takaoka Electric Manufacturing Co., Ltd. of Japan has incorporated the MMX?-enhanced MediaGX™ processor in a new Windows Based Terminal (WBT) to be released this year. Takaoka plans to offer the Takaoka WiNT™ system, Japan's first Windows Based Terminal, to OEM customers worldwide as well as sell it under their own brand name.

Takaoka, Japan's leading provider of "thin client" systems, manufactures and sells terminals and network computers as a specialized network systems manufacturer. The Takaoka WiNT is an A-5-sized compact terminal featuring high performance and low power consumption. Linked with a Microsoft™ Windows™ NT Server 4.0, the WiNT system boasts functions equivalent to those of a PC. Since the network administrator needs to manage only the server, the use of the Windows Based Terminal can substantially reduce operating costs as well as initial costs of hardware.

The Cyrix MediaGX™ processor is a highly-integrated x86 architecture microprocessor, incorporating high-performance graphics, audio functions, a PCI interface controller and memory controller. The integration and power of the MediaGX™ processor platform makes it possible to design systems using fewer devices, which is important for terminal applications where system size is important.

According to Tatsuo Ishihara, president of National Semiconductor Japan Ltd., "We believe that the Windows Based Terminal using our MediaGX processor technology is going to create a significant new market. Takaoka's experience in designing and selling innovative client-server systems makes them an excellent partner as we continue our corporate strategy of advancing our processor and system technology into other Information Appliance applications."

Hironao Yoshida, General manager, planning technical Department, System Division of Takaoka Electric MFG Co., Ltd. said, "Our WBT has achieved high-performance in a compact size through the use of the Cyrix MediaGX? processor. This makes a big difference for customers using the WBT and is also a timely development for us at Takaoka Electronic MFG. CO., Ltd."
