October 21, 1998 - National Semiconductor Corporation? today announced the industry's first single-chip one-time-programmable (OTP) 8-bit microcontroller with 32K of program memory space. The COP8SGR7, with its large program memory, enables designers to achieve faster time-to-market by eliminating the need to compact the initial program code to fit a smaller memory. After code optimization, customers can maximize price/performance by changing to a ROM product that is priced according to the actual size of programmed memory.

In addition to the COP8SGR7, National also announced the COP8SGE7, a similar full-featured 8-bit device with 8K EPROM. Both COP8SGR7 and COP8SGE7 offer a full duplex, software-programmable UART/USART for fast implementation of communication protocols. Two analog comparators can be used for zero crossover detection or single/dual slope. 512 Bytes of on-board RAM are available for on-chip memory storage. Both devices have a 2.7V to 5.5V operating range and are offered in several packages for a wide variety of commercial and industrial applications.

"These new single-chip OTPs provide a path to higher integration and greater functionality, enabling a complete system design without external components," said Michael Holther, COP8 product marketing manager for National's microcontroller product group. "And with National's latest set of development tools, our end customers have best-in-class code development and debugging support, giving them everything they need to be first to market with their products," he noted.

National's new single-chip, feature rich OTP design not only offers clear advantages, it also defines a clear migration path to devices with higher functionality and larger memory size for OEMs and distributors," he added.

As an extension of National's family of 8-bit microcontrollers, the new devices integrate all of the same features, such as internal power-on-reset (POR) to ensure proper power up without external components. Other integrated features include WATCHDOG? logic protection feature with pull-up resistors, up to eight high-current outputs, on-chip R/C oscillator, single/dual slope A/D conversion, and three 16-bit multi-function timers.

Patented EMI reduction circuitry lowers EMI by up to 20dB. Gradual turn-on drivers (GTOs) and internal Icc smoothing filters make the COP8SGR ideal for multi-chip board design, where power considerations and chip-to-chip interference issues are critical.

The COP8SGR7 and COP8SGE7 also feature absolute code security of intellectual property. Once the user code is secured with the optional security feature, the program is virtually hack-proof.

The new devices offer a variety of low power consumption features, enabling system designers to meet the demanding requirements of today's increasing range of low-power applications. These features include low-voltage operation, low current drain and power saving features such as HALT, IDLE, and multi-input wakeup (MIWU).

National offers a full range of user-friendly development tools, allowing designers to quickly complete initial prototype design. Tools include a software simulator, a low cost evaluation and programming unit, a mid-range debug module, and a full-featured iceMASTER 400 for in-circuit emulation.

Software development tools have been enhanced to take advantage of new features on the COP8SGR7 and COP8SGE devices. The COP8 development tool kit will include a COP8-optimized ANSI C-compiler, an assembler, a linker, run-time libraries and a versatile C-SPY high- level language debugger. The C-compiler is trimmed to produce optimized and efficient code. The compiler follows the ANSI standard, but is also enhanced with many chip-specific language extensions to improve embedded development capabilities.

Price and Availability
The COP8SGR7 and COP8SGE7 microcontrollers are available in ratings for commercial temperature range, industrial temperature range or in windowed packages. Available packages include a 44-pin PLCC or 44-pin PQFP with 40 I/O pins, a 40-pin DIP with 36 I/O pins, and a 28-pin SO with 24 I/O pins. Pricing for the 32K COP8SGR7 in 1000-unit lots ranges from $3.55 to $4.89, depending on packaging and temperature grade. 1,000-piece pricing for the 8K COP8SGE7 ranges from $2.99 to $4.29.
