Award Marks the Second Recognition This Year for National's Internet Site

Dec 8, 1998

Dec. 8, 1998 -- National Semiconductor Corporation® today received the 1998 "Outstanding Web Site" WebAward in the interactive services category from the Web Marketing Association (WMA) for going "above and beyond the standard of excellence" on a corporate Web site. The WebAward recognizes companies that possess the vision to transform their sites into powerful communication and business tools. This is the second award recognition for National's Internet site during the last year. The company was also winner of the 1998 Business On The Internet (BOTI) award for best extranet application. Winning Web sites were chosen based on seven criteria: design, innovation, content, technology, interactivity, navigation and ease of use. The WebAward competition this year drew 500 entries from the U.S., Canada, Hong Kong, France, South Africa, United Kingdom and Australia.

William Rice, founder and president of the WMA, helped create the association due to the lack of fair and unbiased evaluation of Web sites. "We wanted to create an environment where Web sites could be objectively evaluated by experts with no hidden agenda, and the WebAward exemplifies that belief," Rice said. "Over 500 entries were judged by our panel of experts from the 75 categories of industries. Winners were measured on a stringent judging criteria based on a point system, and they should feel proud to be recognized by this award," he added.

Internet experts from USA Today, Inter@ctiveWeek, CKS Group and Poppe Tyson were among the expert panel judging sites this year.

"The WebAward recognizes National's use of cutting-edge technology to create an industry-leading Web site for design engineers and purchasing managers," said Phil Gibson, director of interactive marketing at National Semiconductor. "This award is another indicator that we are delivering on our promise to help our customers save their most precious resource -- time."
