Full-Feature Single PHY Device Provides High-Performance Solution for Next-Generation Network Printers, PC Motherboards and Networked Peripherals

Nov 29, 1999

November 29, 1999 - In its continuing effort to provide customers with a complete line of networking solutions for the enterprise and small office/home office (SOHO) markets, National Semiconductor Corporation® (NYSE: NSM) today launched its DP83846A DsPHYTER™ single-chip 3.3V 10/100 PCI Ethernet physical layer transceiver. The DsPHYTER is designed for easy implementation into 10/100 Mb/s Ethernet home or office applications such as printers, PC motherboards and networked peripherals.

The DP83846A DsPHYTERis a full-feature single physical layer device with integrated PMD sub-layers to support both 10Base-T and 100Base-TX Ethernet protocols. It offers customers the combination of National's proven DSP-based physical layer used in the MacPHYTER™ and its mixed-signal expertise in a single, cost-effective chip.

The chip interfaces directly to Twisted Pair media via an external transformer. This device, in turn, interfaces directly to MAC devices through the IEEE 802.3u standard Media Independent Interface (MII), ensuring interoperability between products from different vendors.

"The goal of National and the DsPHYTER is to continue providing single-chip, cost-effective solutions for the Node segment of the enterprise networking market," said Anthony Chiu, marketing manager of National Semiconductor's Network Products Group. "The progression from the PHY and TWISTER, to the 5V PHYTER, the MacPHYTER, and now the DsPHYTER has established National's networking expertise and has provided the springboard for future expansion into the market."

Standards and Support
The DsPHYTER is fully compliant with IEEE 802.3 standards and protocol, including: IEEE 802.3 ENDEC, 10Base-T transceivers and filters, IEEE 802.3u PCS, 100Base-TX transceivers and filters, IEEE 802.3 compliant Auto-Negotiation, and IEEE 802.3u MII.

Price and Availability
The DP83846AVHG DsPHYTER single 10/100 Ethernet transceiver is now available and priced at $5.25 for volume quantities of 1,000. It has been sampling to key OEMs and is in production now.
