National's Geode™ technology powers WebSurfer Pro now available at CompUSA

Dec 13, 1999

December 13, 1999 - National Semiconductor Corporation® (NYSE:NSM) and WebSurfer, Inc. today announced their technologies are powering the WebSurfer Pro set-top box that is being distributed through CompUSA. National's Geode™; GXm processor solution and WebSurfer's software suite are combined in the WebSurfer Pro to enable Internet access without the cost and complexity of personal computers. CompUSA is offering WebSurfer Pro set-top boxes in its 217 retail stores this holiday season for $199.99. Consumers have the option of a purchase program that essentially eliminates the cost of the hardware when they register for 24 months of MindSpring Internet service. Alternatively, customers may use their own Internet Service Provider.

"Consumers want Internet and information access wherever they are and the WebSurfer Pro facilitates this better than any other product," said Michael Polacek, vice president of National's Information Appliance division. "This product further validates National's continuing strategy of enabling easy-to-use information appliances that are optimized for Internet access is reaching full swing."

The WebSurfer Pro Internet appliance software consists of a suite of dynamic applications that includes Web browsing, word processing and Web-based productivity tools. The application suite coincides with WebSurfer's portal, providing users with an elegant and captivating Internet experience. WebSurfer's reference design was cooperatively developed with National Semiconductor and features a National Geode GXm processor solution.

"WebSurfer's relationship with National Semiconductor continues to blossom as our companies further their commitment to developing reliable information appliances that are powered by National's Geode processor technology and WebSurfer software. I encourage holiday shoppers with a desire for easy and affordable Internet access to experience our winning IA solution!" said Paul Batra, WebSurfer President."

National and WebSurfer Partnership
Earlier this year, WebSurfer and National announced a strategic agreement to jointly develop a selection of Internet appliance solutions that integrate National's Geode processor-based solution with WebSurfer Internet appliance software. The resulting WebSurfer Pro features low power consumption, x86 architecture, and high levels of integration. Low power consumption eliminates the need for noisy fans to cool the set-top-box, and x86 architecture ensures full compatibility with plug-ins and applets found on many Web sites that deliver multimedia and other leading-edge Internet experiences. Integration enables National to combine several functions on a single chip, keeping the performance high and the cost low. WebSurfer software allows consumers to access the Internet directly through a standard television set.
