LM4871 in LLP Delivers 2.4W to 3-Ohm Load With 1% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) From 5V Supply In Half the Size of Previous Solutions

Oct 23, 2000

October 23, 2000 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today introduced its popular LM4871 Boomer? audio amplifier in a leadless leadframe package (LLP), a packaging innovation that will enable more power density in a smaller package for maximum performance and space savings. The LM4871 is a bridge-connected amplifier designed for cell phone, notebook and desktop computer, and information appliance sound systems that can drive a speaker with up to 2.4W output (3ohms, 1% THD). The LM4871 also features superior output power and sound quality from low-voltage supplies down to 2.0V with no degradation in performance.

"The LLP is revolutionary in terms of its small footprint and high power dissipation capabilities, and will enable our customers to design in audio solutions in just half the size of previous solutions with no loss of performance," said Steve Kaufman, marketing manager for National's audio amplifier product group. "The benefits of LLP for audio are clear and National will be expanding this package offering to many of our new and existing products."

The LM4871 also incorporates a shutdown mode that reduces supply current consumption to less than one microamp (typical). This eliminates the need for an external FET, saving the designer both board space and cost. An internal thermal shutdown mechanism protects the device from overheating.

To improve system performance, the LM4871 features circuitry to suppress the pops and clicks often associated with turn-on or turn-off. It operates without the aid of bootstrap capacitors or snubber networks. A minimal number of external components, combined with the product's small footprint, greatly simplifies overall system design, saves board space and lowers manufacturing costs. The part will also be made available in the industry standard MSOP package.
