National Semiconductor Elects Steven R. Appleton to Board of Directors

November 6, 2001 - National Semiconductor (NYSE:NSM) today named Steven R. Appleton to its Board of Directors. Appleton, 41, is the Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and President of Micron Technology, Inc, a leading worldwide provider of semiconductor memory solutions for computer and computer-peripheral manufacturing, consumer electronics, CAD/CAM, office automation, telecommunications, networking and data processing, and graphics display.

"Steve Appleton's broad experience and deep understanding of our industry will be a valuable addition to our board," said Brian L. Halla, Chairman, President and CEO of National Semiconductor. "His semiconductor expertise and proven business leadership abilities are an ideal complement to National's technologies, products, and strategy."

Appleton joined Micron in 1983 and has held a series of increasingly responsible positions, including Production Manager, Director of Manufacturing, and Vice President of Manufacturing. In 1991, Appleton was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of Micron Technology, Inc. In 1994, Appleton was appointed to his current position of Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President.

Appleton formerly served on the Board of Directors for Sematech, an industry leading technology consortium, and St. Luke's, a regional hospital. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Semiconductor Industry Association, as a trustee of Boise State University, and as a member of the Idaho Business Council. In addition, he received a presidential appointment to serve on the Semiconductor Technology Council. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Boise State University in 1982.
