National Semiconductor and Legend Holdings Help Mid-Career and Older Populations Get Online in China

Legend's New Personal Internet Access Device, Designed with National Semiconductor's Geode WebPAD Platform, Debuts at Comdex In Las Vegas

Nov 7, 2001

November 7, 2001 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM), the leading silicon and systems provider for information appliances, announced today that Legend Holdings Limited (HKSE: 992), a top-ranking computer manufacturer in Asia Pacific, selected the National® Geode™ WebPAD™ platform for a new personal Internet access device designed for China's mid-career and older populations.  National and Legend will demonstrate this product for the first time in the United States at National's Comdex 2001 booth (L3005) next week.

The Legend Tianle, now available in Beijing, is designed to meet the needs of older adults who want a simplified experience for surfing the Internet. It is an easy-to-use, all-in-one unit that features a touchscreen for controls rather than a mouse or keyboard. Set up is also easy: users simply connect the unit to a phone line via a 56K modem or broadband connection, then plug the unit into an electrical outlet. The Tianle can be used as a PDA, for playing games, to quickly access information on health services, and to automatically dial saved telephone numbers. When equipped with a web camera and related software, users also can hold videophone conversations with family and friends.

"We chose to work with National because we wanted to develop a product with very specific features and functionality, and the flexibility of National's Geode WebPAD platform provided the key ingredients that helped us bring this device to market," said Tian Haisha, vice president of Legend.

With this product, National and Legend are tapping into one of the world's largest potential Internet markets. By the end of 2000, only 150,000 Chinese people over 50 years of age had any experience in browsing the Internet. That's less than one percent of the total Internet users in China. "According to a market research report, 90 percent of China's older urban population has heard of the Internet. Among them, 70 percent are interested in exploring this new technology," Tian said. "However, since most are not computer savvy, using the PC as an Internet access device is too complicated for them. Legend saw the strong demand in this area and developed Tianle to meet the specific needs of this market."

"Legend has taken its experience in consumer and commercial products, as well as its own Internet service, and developed a next-generation personal access device that meets the need of China's over-50 population," said Jeff Waters, National's director of consumer access devices.  "National's WebPAD platform is uniquely designed to help our customers create affordable and easy-to-use information appliance, such as the Tianle. We're happy to join Legend in offering this new technology, so China's people can take advantage of all the Internet has to offer  -- from new communication avenues to online purchases and access to healthcare."

National's Geode WebPAD Platform
National's Geode WebPAD platform is a complete hardware and software reference design for an optimized personal Internet access device. The design kit allows manufacturers to reduce their overall system costs and shorten their time-to-market.  In addition to using the x86 based Geode GX1 processor, the Tianle incorporates a wide variety of National silicon, including a companion chip and several industry-leading analog parts, such as an audio codec, microcontroller and power management chips.

This product is currently available in China.
