National Semiconductor Launches Bluetooth Stack Partner Program; WIDCOMM Inc. is First Partner in Worldwide Software Support Project

Program Will Provide Complete, Validated Bluetooth Wireless Technology Solutions For Customers Building PCs, PDAs and Cellular Phones

Dec 10, 2001

December 10, 2001 - Today at the Bluetooth™ Developers Conference, National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) launched an innovative Bluetooth Stack Partner Program to provide National's customers with host and applications software for systems using Bluetooth wireless technology. Bluetooth technology enables users to connect electronic devices quickly and easily without cables to share information within close range. National named WIDCOMM Inc., a San Diego-based supplier of Bluetooth wireless solutions, as the first member of the partnership program.

"With the introduction of this new program, National now supplies a complete system solution for Bluetooth applications, including software, firmware and hardware platforms," said Malcolm Humphrey, business unit director for National's wireless data product line. "Our Bluetooth Stack Partner Program allows National to concentrate on its core competency of designing and manufacturing silicon chips, while our partners provide our customers a choice of optimized software and stack solutions."

The term "Bluetooth stack" refers to layers of software used to implement various parts of the Bluetooth communications protocol. Specifically, National's program will address the software that typically executes on the host processor of a system, such as a PDA or PC, to which the Bluetooth hardware is attached.

"We are happy to join National Semiconductor, a recognized leader in silicon solutions for wireless communications, in integrating the total package system designers need for end product development. Combining our skills in implementing Bluetooth solutions with National's silicon capabilities can only accelerate the deployment of Bluetooth wireless connectivity products," said Ron Wong, director, product marketing at WIDCOMM.

About National's Bluetooth Stack Partner Program
National is forming Bluetooth Stack partnerships with companies that will provide a unique set of enabling technologies for each of National's target market segments: PCs, PC peripherals, cellular phones, headsets and PDAs.  These stacks will be validated across National's Bluetooth silicon chips and modules, and for major operating systems. National is modeling the Bluetooth Stack Partner program on a similar program it developed for the Internet Appliance Division to provide software support for National's Geode™ processor systems.

By providing validated software and hardware solutions, the Stack Partner program will enable customers to reduce their system design costs with shorter time-to-market cycles. National's stack partners will also benefit from development platform and technical support, as well as increased market exposure at joint trade show promotions, media communications and customer referrals.  More information about the program National is available at Stack Partner Program.
