National Semiconductor Names Dr. Nikhil Balram to Chief Technology Officer, Displays Group

December 9, 2002 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) has named Dr. Nikhil Balram to the newly created position of Chief Technology Officer of the Displays Group. 

Dr. Balram joins National from SONICBlue, where he was vice president of product marketing for ReplayTV™ and Connected Home Products. Prior positions include vice president of consumer products at Genesis Microchip, where he led the definition of the consumer IC roadmap. Earlier, he served as executive vice president and general manager of the consumer products group at Sage, and as vice president of advanced technology at Faroudja Inc.  Prior positions include director of systems architecture at S3 Corporation, staff scientist at Kaiser Electronics and video/graphics VLSI staff engineer at IBM. 

Dr. Balram is recognized throughout the industry and academia as a leading innovator of display technologies for the computer, TV, DVD, video and projector markets. He has broad experience in marketing, international business and technology development, integrated circuit and systems architecture, and engineering management.

At National, he will be responsible for defining technology roadmaps for the company's broad line of display-centric integrated circuits, and for the development of new products for specific display market segments.

Dr. Balram is the author of more than 30 publications on display technologies, holds four U.S. patents, and has another pending. He played a major role in the creation of Video2000™, a comprehensive international video benchmark. The video quality test sequences he created are now widely used in the consumer and display industries. A frequent speaker at industry events, Dr. Balram is also a board member of the Society for Information Displays.

He holds B.S., M.S., and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
