National Semiconductor Introduces Major Enhancements to its Family of Radiation-Tolerant Space-Level Integrated Circuits

Designed for Longer Life, Higher Performance and Lower Costs in Satellites and Manned Spacecraft, 16 New Products in National’s FACT Family of Logic Devices Feature 300Krad Radiation Tolerance

Jul 22, 2003

July 22, 2003 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) announced major upgrades to its popular FACT family of space-level integrated circuits with the introduction of 16 new 300Krad radiation-tolerant devices designed to give longer life and lower total cost of ownership in manned and unmanned space craft.

FACT logic products are National’s family of high-speed advanced CMOS circuits that offer an industry-leading combination high speed, low power dissipation, high noise immunity, extended power supply range and high reliability. FACT products are ideally suited for use in logic-based systems and for interfacing with ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) designs in all applications requiring radiation-tolerant 300Krad guaranteed devices.

“This enhanced FACT logic family builds on National’s leadership in space-level products,” said Mike Maher, Manager of National’s Radiation Engineering Group. “Aimed at system developers designing for new, harsher orbits or extended service life, this family provides 300Krad performance which can lower the total cost of ownership and improve design flexibility.”

Features and Benefits
Since its introduction in 1991, National’s FACT family of Radiation Hardness Assured (RHA) products has grown to a portfolio of 61 products qualified to the 100Krad level. National’s 300K rad products provide additional radiation tolerance needed in the most extreme military and aerospace environments.

The initial offering represents the 16 most commonly used part types in the family; additional products will follow. Specified and guaranteed at both 3 and 5 volts, FACT products have been used extensively in space because of its proven reliability. FACT products are resistant to total ionization radiation due to its thin gate oxide and low temperature processing.

The radiation tolerant FACT family is also latchup resistant with an LET of greater than 120 (MeV/ mg/cm2) while SEU is equally impressive with LET values greater than 40 (MeV/ mg/cm2). With product delivery lead times of less than 20 weeks, achieved through National’s dedicated space-level manufacturing facility, FACT has become the logic family of choice for space system developers.

Packages and Availability
National’s new radiation-tolerant products are available in 14-and 20-pin ceramic flat or SOIC (small outline integrated circuit) packages. In addition, the new 300K rad FACT products are also available in die form.  More information is available at http://www.national.com/appinfo/space/index.html
