National Semiconductor Introduces Boomer Headphone Amplifier For Portable Audio Applications Powered By Single-Cell Battery

Jul 28, 2003

July 28, 2003 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM), providing best-in-class technology for analog products, today announced a Boomer® stereo headphone amplifier designed to operate from a one-cell battery.  National’s low-profile package allows this amplifier to be used in the tiniest of applications that require only one 1.5V battery.  The LM4916’s small size minimizes board space, while the surface mount package maximizes output power in the device.  This product is suited for applications in small, portable, one-cell audio applications and consumer devices such as personal CD and mini disc players and electronic toys and games.

“The LM4916 allows National to enter the growing marketplace of portable consumer electronics that are powered by a single-cell battery,” said Ken Boyce, marketing director for National Semiconductor’s audio products group.  “National’s LM4916 features high-quality sound that enables consumers to enjoy true audio fidelity from their portable electronic devices.”

National’s LM4916 is unity gain stable.  It is both a mono differential output (for bridge-tied loads, or BTL) audio power amplifier and a single-ended stereo headphone amplifier.  Operating on a single 1.5V supply, the mono BTL mode delivers 85mW into an 8 Ohm load at 1% total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N).  In single-ended stereo headphone mode, the amplifier delivers 14mW per channel into a 16 Ohm load at 1% THD+N.  The LM4916 features circuitry that reduces pops and clicks that normally occur during device turn-on and turn-off, an externally controlled low power consumption, active-low shutdown mode and thermal shutdown protection circuitry.

Pricing and Availability
The LM4916 is available now in LLP® chip-scale packaging and MINI SOIC packaging, and is  priced at $0.97 in 1,000-unit quantities.  More information on the LM4916 is available at http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LM4916.html  For more information on National’s audio products, visit http://www.national.com/appinfo/audio/
