National Semiconductor Announces Three New High-Performance Variable Gain Amplifiers for Communication, Video, and Industrial Markets

Manufactured on National's Innovative VIP10 Process Technology, These Latest Amplifiers Complete the Conversion of Comlinear Products to National's Best-In-Class High-Speed LMH Family

Dec 1, 2003

December 1, 2003 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today announced three new variable gain amplifiers (VGA) designed as higher-performance substitutes for the company's popular Comlinear (CLC) line of amplifiers.  These products are ideal for use in applications such as professional and consumer video equipment, high-speed digital subscriber line (DSL) modems and cellular base stations, displays, as well as instrumentation, test and medical systems.

Utilizing National's innovative VIP10 process technology, National has developed the most power-efficient, highest performance, high-speed amplifier products on the market today. To date, National Semiconductor has released more than 32 high-speed amplifiers on its VIP10 process technology.

"National's high-speed amplifiers offer an industry-leading combination of power-efficiency and high performance required for state-of-the-art applications," said Erroll Dietz, Product Line Director, Amplifier Group. "Our design capabilities and VIP10 manufacturing process technology enable National to extend its leading position as an IC supplier for the most demanding uses."

Key Technical Specifications
The new LMH6502/6503/6504 wideband, voltage-controlled variable gain amplifiers allow high-frequency large signals (slew rate >1500V/µs) and can also drive heavy load currents (75mA). They additionally provide accurate device-to-device gain matching (less than ±0.7dB) and excellent attenuation range, (>70dB) making them ideal for automatic gain control applications in the communication, industrial and video markets.

Pin-for-pin replacements for the CLC520/522/5523, the LMH6502/6503 consumes approximately 300mW with a speed of 130MHz, and the LMH6504 consumes 100mW with a speed of 150MHz. The LMH6502/6503 accepts a differential input and the LMH6504 is single-ended. While the gain control is linear in dB for a large portion of the total gain range for the LMH6502 and LMH6504, the LMH6503 is linear in V/V.

The Global Market for Amplifier Products
Analog operational amplifiers are one of the key building blocks of practically all electronic systems. They convert and condition real-word analog information into signals that can be read and understood by digital systems. National Semiconductor is one of the world's largest manufacturers of amplifiers and comparators, with a 12.9 percent market share according to research firm iSuppli.  The company is also the fastest-growing amplifier provider among the top five, with a 7.6 percent increase in market share between 2001 and 2002.

VIP10 Process
National's new amplifiers are based upon the VIP10 process.  Developed in National's wafer fabrication site in Arlington, Texas, VIP10 is a high speed, dielectrically isolated, complementary bipolar IC process that utilizes deep trench technology on a bonded wafer for complete dielectric isolation and optimal high-speed amplifier performance.  VIP10 is the process technology that allows National to design the most power-efficient, performance-oriented high- speed amplifiers on the market today.

Price, Availability and More Information
National's LMH6502 and LMH6503 are offered in SOIC-14 and TSSOP-14 packages and are priced at $3.48 each in quantities of 1000 units. The LMH6504 is offered in SOIC-8 and MSOP-8 packages, and is priced at $2.52 each in quantities of 1000 units.
