National Semiconductor Licenses Gigabit Ethernet PHY Core to Atmel

Dec 20, 2004

December 20, 2004 – National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: NSM) announced today that Atmel Corporation has licensed National’s gigabit Ethernet physical layer (PHY) core for Atmel’s highly integrated system-on-a-chip data storage and networking products.

Atmel, a global leader in the design and manufacture of storage and broadband communications solutions, will embed the gigabit Ethernet PHY core into its server connectivity products, network processors and transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) offload engines.

“Combining National’s Gigabit Ethernet PHY core together with Atmel’s HPLC (High Performance Low Cost) architecture enables Atmel  to offer next generation server connectivity products to its customers that will reduce cost and speed up the development of a complete system,” said Mehdi Bathaee, General Manager and Managing Director of Atmel’s Network-Storage Business Unit.

“As a proven supplier of analog interface technology, National makes it possible for licensees including Atmel to focus their resources on integration efforts and adding other features to their products,” said Mike Noonen, Vice President of National Semiconductor’s Communications and Computing Group.  “Our experience with Ethernet and analog building blocks will enable Atmel to produce a high-performance and highly integrated solution that will reduce power consumption and system costs for their customers.”

National’s gigabit Ethernet PHY core leverages National’s 25-year heritage in innovative analog design for the communications market.  The core, building on this legacy, has a field proven architecture that delivers gigabit per second performance, low power consumption, and enhanced testability.  A fully featured single port Ethernet PHY supporting 10BaseT, 100BaseTX, and 1000BaseT Ethernet protocols, National’s Gigabit Ethernet PHY core enables a cost effective, smooth integration migration path from existing fast Ethernet applications.
