National Semiconductor Introduces Second-Generation Dual-Rail Ultra-Low Dropout Linear Regulator Family

Mar 2, 2005

March 2, 2005 - National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today introduced the LP38841, LP38842 and LP38843, 0.8A, 1.5A and 3A ultra-low dropout linear regulators.

These high-current, highly efficient fast-response regulators can maintain output voltage regulation with minimum input-to-output voltage drop. The devices’ fast transient response makes them suitable for ASIC power supplies in desktop and notebook computers, graphics cards and servers, server core and I/O supplies, digital signal processor (DSP) and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) power supplies, and SMPS post-regulators.

Fabricated on a CMOS process, the devices operate from two input voltages: Vbias provides voltage to drive the gate of the N-MOS power transistor, while Vin supplies power to the load. This dual-rail architecture enables high efficiency and power savings for the customer and has a very low quiescent current of 2 mA typical.

Key Features:

  • Ideal for conversion from 1.8 V or 1.5 V inputs
  • Designed for use with low ESR ceramic capacitors
  • Fixed output voltages at 0.8 V, 1.2 V and 1.5 V
  • Adjustable output voltage range from 0.56 V to 1.5 V
  • Ultra-low dropout voltage (75 mV/115 mV/210 mV typical at 0.8A/1.5A/3A)
  • 1.5 percent initial output accuracy
  • 30 nA quiescent current in shutdown (typical)
  • Overtemperature/overcurrent protection

Pricing and Availability
Available now in 5-lead TO-220 and TO-263 packages, the LP38841 and LP38842 also are available in 8-lead PSOP packages. National offers all its packages with a lead-free option. The LP38841 is priced at $2.08, the LP38842 is priced at $2.18 and the LP38843 is priced at $2.68. All pricing is in 1,000-unit quantities.
