June 6, 2005 - A new WEBENCH® Signal-Path Designer toolset from National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) provides engineers with an easy-to-use tool to select, design and evaluate critical data converter and amplifier/filter components and circuits.

Designing signal paths is a known art form where analog experts select resolution, sampling speed and filtering required by their desired system performance.  The effects of noise, impedance, signal-level matching and power usage all play a significant role.

The Signal-Path Designer tool offers an intuitive, step-by-step guide to balance the resolution, speed and power consumption of a performance-matched ADC with the ideal filters, passive components and amplifier to create the optimal performance ADC/amplifier circuit.  The tool also provides filter simulations for both the ideal and device models for comparison purposes.

National Semiconductor offers a broad range of general-purpose and high-speed ADCs ranging from kilo-sample to giga-sample per second sampling rates.  National’s recently announced general-purpose family, available for selection and testing in the WEBENCH Signal-Path Designer toolset, consists of 36 8-, 10- and 12-bit ADCs available in 1-, 2-, 4- and 8-channel configurations.  These ADCs offer guaranteed performance across three speed ranges between 50 KSPS (kilo-samples per second) and 1 MSPS.  They are also pin- and function-compatible within a specific channel configuration, which allows designers to easily migrate across resolutions and speeds.  National’s high-speed data conversion products, with resolutions from 1 MSPS to multiple giga-samples per second, will be added to the WEBENCH Signal Path Designer toolset in the next year.
