National Semiconductor’s Dual Mux-Buffer with Integrated Equalizer Delivers Industry’s Best Signal Integrity

Dual Signal-Conditioning Multiplexer/Repeater Adds Redundancy to Legacy Backplanes and Cost-effective Cables for Data Transfers from 1 Gbps to 4 Gbps

October 24, 2005 – National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: NSM), a leading supplier of high-speed interface devices, today introduced a signal conditioning and repeating product with dual 1:2 and 2:1 multiplexer functions that extend the reach of high-speed switch, router, storage area network (SAN) and server backplanes.  The DS40MB200 can also be used as a redundancy switch in backplanes, and can extend the reach of PCI express connectivity in PCs, security systems and professional video applications.

The DS40MB200 is a dual 1:2 and 2:1 multiplexer with integrated equalizers on every input, configurable pre-emphasis on every output and up to 4 Gbps of serial I/O performance, providing the lowest jitter and longest cable reach in the industry.  In many applications, cost-effective backplanes and cables require equalization and boost to ensure reliable data transfer between the source and destination.  The DS40MB200 is optimized for error-free transmission on more than 80 inches of FR4 backplanes or up to 15 meters of low-cost cables.

The DS40MB200 easily attaches to a field programmable gate-array (FPGA) or application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) to provide signal path redundancy, signal buffering and improved serial I/O performance on low-cost interconnects.  It features six kilovolts of ESD (electrostatic discharge) immunity.  The high-speed serial inputs feature an integrated receive equalizer to compensate for input transmission line loss.
Technical Features of the DS40MB200 Multiplexer/Buffer
The DS40MB200’s high-speed serial inputs feature an integrated equalizer, the outputs feature configurable pre-emphasis, and the input stages have a fixed-equalizer to reduce ISI (inter-symbol interference) distortion from board traces.  The multiplexer/buffer compensates for up to 5 dB of transmission loss.  Each output drive has four configurable steps of pre-emphasis to compensate against transmission losses from long FR4 backplanes.  The pre-emphasis levels can be independently controlled for the line-side and switch-side drivers.  The outputs buffer and condition the signal so that the lower and higher frequencies reach similar amplitudes at the end of the backplane and minimize deterministic jitter.

The two independent channels each contain a transmitter with a fan-out of two and a receiver with a 2:1 input multiplexer.  The multiplexers can be configured to handle system redundancy requirements from the line card to the controller card.  They also can be configured to provide a loop-back function through the device for either device-level or system-level testing.  The internal loop-back paths from switch-side input to switch-side output enable at-speed testing.  All receiver inputs and driver outputs are terminated internally utilizing terminating resistors on-chip. The inputs are compatible to AC-coupled LVDS (low voltage differential signaling), LVPECL (low voltage positive emitter coupled logic) and CML (common mode logic).
