National Semiconductor Offers Designers a Higher-Performance Alternative to Lossy Linear Solutions for Bias Supplies up to 150 mA

LM5009 is a New 150mA, 100V Step-Down Switching Regulator

Apr 26, 2006

April 26, 2006 -- National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: NSM), a worldwide leader in power management technology, today introduced the LM5009, a monolithic step-down switching regulator with all the functions needed to implement a cost-effective, efficient power supply. Capable of driving up to a 150 mA load over a 9V- to 100V-input voltage range, this device provides an alternative to lossy linear solutions without the added complexity.

The LM5009 is ideal for use in 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V rectified AC systems, 42V automotive solutions and non-isolated AC charge-coupled supplies.  It also can be used as a heat sink eliminator for a classic linear regulator and as an LED current source.

About the LM5009
The LM5009 includes the following features and benefits:

  • Highly efficient operation of 93.3 percent
  • An integrated 100V, 1.15-Ohm N-Channel MOSFET for component count sourcing
  • Guaranteed 150 mA output current capability for easy and accurate operation
  • Up to 600 kHz operation for decreased component size
  • Fast transient response for improved line and load transients
  • No control-loop compensation, which allows for greater ease of use
  • Input voltage feed forward provides near-constant operating frequency
  • 2 percent accurate 2.5V feedback from -40 degrees C to 125 degrees C
  • VCC pin allows for improved efficiency at light loads
  • External shutdown control for use in system management functionality
  • Protection circuitry includes intelligent current limit protection and thermal shutdown
