High-Performance Audio Amplifier and Power-over-Ethernet Controller from National Semiconductor Named to EDN’s Hot 100 Products of 2006

Dec 21, 2006

December 21, 2006 – EDN magazine has named the LM4562 dual audio operational amplifier and LM5071 Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) controller from National Semiconductor (NYSE: NSM) to this year's list of analog and power winners in its annual Hot 100 Products issue. EDN's staff of technical editors analyzes and compares the industry's product introductions and makes its selections at the end of each year.

National’s dual, high-fidelity LM4562 audio op amp practically eliminates distortion, with total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N) of 0.00003 percent. It sets a new level of performance with its remarkably low distortion, low noise, high speed, wide operating voltage and high output drive. These features, including 2.7 nV/rt Hz noise density and 56 MHz gain bandwidth product, make the op amp well-suited for professional and high-end audio applications such as audio/visual (AV) receivers, preamplifiers and mixers, as well as a range of 34V medical imaging and industrial applications.

The LM5071 is the industry’s first single-chip controller specifically designed for PoE devices that operate from alternative power sources such as an AC adapter or the PoE-enabled network such as IP phones or security cameras.  Simplifying the design of applications, the LM5071 solves the interface problem encountered by many PoE equipment designers through an integrated Powered Device (PD) front end. This integrated PD front end accepts power from the power sourcing equipment or auxiliary power to a single chip with a DC-DC controller that steps down the input voltage to power various PD loads.

EDN’s editors select products for its annual Hot 100 Products issue from the hundreds of articles that have appeared in the magazine. The list encompasses a range of architectures and technologies from analog integrated circuits to multimedia to test-and-measurement tools.

"EDN editors cover an amazingly broad technology base and see compelling products across the spectrum throughout the year,” said Editor in Chief Maury Wright. “The Hot 100 highlights the best of the products from our feature and new-product articles and web coverage over the course of the year.  From components to processors to test instruments, each of these 100 products stands out in the crowd.”
