Teranetics Introduces Energy Efficient 10GBASE-T Featuring National Semiconductor’s PowerWise Technology

Teranetics’ TN2022 Combines with National’s PowerWise Technology to Deliver Significant Power Savings in 10Gigabit Ethernet over Copper Implementations

Sep 23, 2008

September 23, 2008 – Teranetics Inc., a leading provider of high performance Ethernet solutions, today announced that its market-leading TN2022 dual port PHY now includes support of National Semiconductor Corp.’s energy-efficient PowerWise® adaptive voltage scaling (AVS) technology to reduce per-port power used by the TN2022. National’s PowerWise technology combined with Teranetics’ TN2022, already the most power efficient implementation available at 6 Watts per port using conventional techniques, makes 10GBASE-T system implementations more compelling and more broadly applicable across a range of networking and computing equipment.

“Low power and high energy efficiency are core metrics to make the most usable modern networking equipment,” said Kamal Dalmia, vice president of marketing at Teranetics. “By supporting National’s PowerWise technology, Teranetics provides our customers with another tool to make the most competitive, energy-efficient products available.”

“New applications are creating demand for higher bandwidth and energy-efficiency in communications infrastructure equipment,” said Ravi Ambatipudi, product line director for Advanced Power Solutions at National Semiconductor. “Working with Teranetics to demonstrate the clear benefits of PowerWise technology in high-end networking is allowing National Semiconductor to extend its energy-efficiency value to a broader customer base.”

The 10 Gbps Standard
Ratified by the IEEE in June 2006, 10GBASE-T (IEEE 802.3an) defines the transmission of 10Gbps Ethernet over unshielded twisted pair (UTP) copper cabling. As with previous speed generations of Ethernet technology, the creation of the copper standard lowers the cost of 10 Gbps network links below that of optical technologies and further accelerates the adoption of 10 Gigabit Ethernet into network infrastructures.

National Semiconductors PowerWise Technology
National’s PowerWise brand signifies:

  • Products with individually outstanding performance-to-power ratios.
  • Products that provide an energy-efficient design when combined with other National PowerWise integrated circuits (ICs).
  • National’s Adaptive Energy Management intellectual property.
To system design engineers, energy efficiency is defined by a smaller energy footprint, less current and less heat generation. To make it easier for these design engineers to find the most energy-optimized ICs available, National has classified its power management and signal-path products with outstanding performance-to-power ratios and added them to its PowerWise line.
