National Semiconductor’s SolarMagic Wins Intersolar Award

Organizer of World’s Largest Solar Event Acknowledges SolarMagic Power Optimizers’ Innovation, Effectiveness in Solving Real-World Problem

May 27, 2009

May 27, 2009 - National Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:NSM) today announced that its SolarMagicTM power optimizers received the prestigious Intersolar Award 2009 in the Photovoltaics category. A panel of experts appointed by the organizers of the Intersolar exhibition, together with the German Solar Industry Association, selected National’s SolarMagic for the award. They noted the SolarMagic power optimizers’ success in maximizing the energy output of solar arrays when affected by real-world conditions.

Shade, debris and other forms of panel mismatch affecting just a single solar panel can cause the entire array to underperform. For example, as little as 10 percent shade on one panel can result in a 50 percent energy loss. However, with SolarMagic power optimizers, an array owner can recoup over 50 percent of lost power.

“Built on National’s 50-year history in reliable, power management analog circuit technology, SolarMagic can revolutionize the PV world. SolarMagic power optimizers mitigate power loss, enable installers to design more aesthetically pleasing arrays, and enhance the predictability and life time of solar installations. We are honored to be recognized with the Intersolar Award acknowledging the tremendous potential of our innovation,” said Brian Halla, chairman and CEO of National Semiconductor.

The Intersolar Award submission process was open to new products and technologies on display at Intersolar, and there were three award winners in each of the two categories, Photovoltaics and Solar Thermal Technology. The award winners represent both technological and economic innovations, create scope for cost reduction and have the potential to make an important contribution towards satisfying industrial or societal needs.

National will demonstrate its SolarMagic power optimizers at its Intersolar booths in Hall A2, Booth #271 (indoors) and in FG350 (outdoors). The exhibition, in Munich, Germany, runs May 27-29, 2009. For more information on SolarMagic, visit www.solarmagic.com.
