(NYSE:TXN)

DALLAS, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today introduced a new family of quad supply voltage supervisors (SVSs) with programmable delay and watchdog timer, which minimize board space in today's multi-rail power supply designs. The TPS386000, TPS386020, TPS386040, and TPS386060 supervisors can monitor four power rails that are greater than 0.4 V with a threshold accuracy of 0.25 percent. This accuracy combined with an integrated watchdog timer provides system reliability for processor-based applications. The TPS386000 family of devices offer an independent programmable delay input for each supervisor channel, which can be set from 1.25 ms to 10 seconds for power supply sequencing. Order the TPS386000 evaluation module today: www.ti.com/tps386000-pr.

The TPS386000 devices operate with a very low quiescent current of 12 uA, which can help minimize system power consumption. They are designed for applications such as telecom infrastructure, networking, server/storage, industrial and analog sequencing applications.

PRNewswire

DALLAS

(NYSE:TXN)

DALLAS, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today introduced a family of 200-mA, low dropout regulators (LDOs), which offer an auto low-power mode that combines ultra-low quiescent current of less than 8 uA with fast transient response of +/-50 mV while maintaining low noise and a high power supply rejection ratio (PSRR). With 70 percent lower quiescent current than existing solutions, the new LDOs help increase battery runtime without sacrificing performance in noise-sensitive applications, such as smart phones, MP3 players, RF modules, remote controls, ZigBee® network systems and handheld consumer devices. For product details see: www.ti.com/tps727-pr.

Typical high-performance LDOs require the load quiescent current to be 25 uA or less. Auto low-power mode allows the TPS727xx to achieve less than 8 uA without an additional mode pin and automatically switches to and from low power depending on load current. In addition, the use of auto low-power mode eliminates the need to modify software drivers to control the mode pin, which speeds and simplifies the design process. It also reduces cost by eliminating the need for a general purpose input/output (GPIO) pin and overhead firmware.

Key features and benefits

Low-power operation with innovative auto low-power mode, ultra-low quiescent current of 8 uA, fast transient response +/-50mV for 200mA, low noise 32uVRMS and high PSRR 70dB at 1kHz helps increase battery runtime without sacrificing noise

Enables use of small 1.0 uF ceramic capacitors, which allows for a smaller overall solution

Provides low dropout of 130 mV, plus stable and accurate output voltage range of 0.9-5 V, which increases system reliability

Factory EEPROM programming of the output voltage provides the flexibility to quickly sample and release custom V out versions

Find out more about TI's linear regulator portfolio and selected products for portable applications by visiting the links below:

MSP430FE42x2 MCUs integrate all metering functionality onto a single chip and offers ultra-low power operation so that only simple voltage regulation such as that provided by TI's TPS78230 regulator is required for a complete solution. FE42x2 MCUs come in a 64-pin LQFP package, offer up to 32 kB of in-system programmable flash memory and are available today. FE42x2 MCUs are fully compatible with the $149 MSP-FET430U64 JTAG emulation toolkit, speeding development and time to market. For more information, please visit TI's metering microsite at www.ti.com/meteringpr.

MSP430FE42x2 key features and benefits

Unique embedded signal processor (ESP) peripheral fully automates energy conversion by integrating two independent, high-resolution sigma-delta ADCs, programmable gain amplifiers, a temperature sensor, precision voltage reference, H/W multiplier and a dedicated fixed function MSP430 CPU.

The ESP provides 0.1 percent accurate energy measurement over a dynamic current range of 1000- to-1, surpassing the 1 percent accuracy common in typical meters today.

A second, fully-programmable on-chip MSP430 CPU is available for application processing and communication functions. An enhanced watchdog timer, brownout protection and a supply voltage supervisor increase system reliability.

A 128 segment LCD driver, a three channel 16-bit pulse width modulation timer, serial communication port and a basic timer for a real-time clock function provide all functionality for a complete meter implementation while saving board space, reducing development time and streamlining time-to-market.

Direct device operation from 3V supply with the CPU and ESP active at only 2.5 mA. During a power outage, the device can operate in standby mode at 1.1 uA with real-time clock function active. Ultra-low power can enable 10 and 20-year battery life in metering applications.

TI's complete portfolio of smart solutions drive intelligent metering applications

TI's utility metering portfolio includes optimized solutions for electricity, heat, water and gas metering, as well as for power line communication (PLC) and radio frequency (RF) interfaces such as ZigBee&#174 for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). As part of a smart solution, previously independent systems like meters, home thermostats and large appliances can communicate wirelessly or over existing power lines to help consumers make more informed choices about energy by displaying usage and billing information and performing demand response, remote connect and diagnostics via automatic communication to and from the utility.

Find out more about TI's MSP430FE42x2 by visiting the links below:

The new chips offer a programmable current-limit threshold from 75 mA to 1.3 A via an external resister with up to 6 percent accuracy. The constant current TPS2552/53 and latch-off TPS2552-1/53-1 provide at least a 50 percent improvement in current limit accuracy compared to competing solutions. The TPS2552/3 devices limit the output current to a safe level by switching into a constant-current mode when the output load exceeds the current-limit threshold while the TPS2552-1/3-1 turns the switch off completely during over-current events. The enhanced accuracy of the TPS2552/53 also enables the device to be used as a simple circuit-breaking or current-limiting solution for a wide range of applications outside of consumer end equipment, including optical modules and low current management rails in telecommunications systems. The integrated circuit supports an input voltage of 0.7-V to 5.5-V and an output voltage range of 1.8-V to 5.5-V, extending battery life in low-power microcontroller-based designs, such as single AA or coin-cell alkaline applications. See: www.ti.com/tps61220-pr.

The new TPS61220 boost converter, which comes in a small SC-70 package, provides full battery capacity utilization of a portable system, because of its ability to start up with a 0.7-V input voltage into a connected load. Based on a hysteretic, off-time control method, the device uses synchronous rectification to maintain more than 85 percent power efficiency at the lowest possible operating current. This allows microcontroller-based applications, such as those that use TI's new CC430 microcontroller and low-power RF on a chip (www.ti.com/cc430), to extend battery life by maintaining efficient standby operation.

The TPS61220 provides output current up to 50 mA at a 5-V output, and discharges the system's lithium-ion battery down to 2.5-V. The device's output voltage can be programmed by an external resistor divider, or is fixed internally on the chip. In addition, the converter can be disabled to minimize battery drain.

Smallest boost converter solution in an SC-70 package

The TPS61220, which comes in a 6-pin, SC-70 package, can achieve a total DC/DC converter solution size of 6.4 x 9 mm with a height of only 1 mm. The small size and high performance allow designers to implement the device in any portable, microcontroller-based application powered by A, AA or AAA batteries.

Key technical features of the TPS61220:

85 percent efficiency at 30 mA output current at 3.3-V (Vin greater than 1.2-V) and 20 mA output current at 5-V (Vin greater than 1.2-V)

Typical device quiescent current of 5 uA

Startup into load at 0.7-V input voltage

Operating input voltage range from 0.7-V to 5.5-V

Fixed and adjustable output voltage options from 1.8-V to 5.5-V

Overtemperature protection

Pricing and availability

The TPS61220 boost converters are sampling today, and are scheduled to be available in volume by the end of 2008. Suggested resale pricing in quantities of 1,000 units is $0.65. TPS61xxx evaluation modules, application notes and TI's DC/DC Quick Reference Guide are available through power.ti.com.

Leading power management IC portfolio for MSP430 microcontrollers

TI power management products support a wide range of microcontroller-based designs, including those MSP430-based applications that require ultra-low input voltage, low quiescent current boost conversion or a low-power step-down configuration. TI's TPS780xx (www.ti.com/tps780xx) is the industry's first 500 nA, dual-output low-dropout regulators (LDOs) available in a 2 mm x 2 mm SON package.

TI 1.5-A linear battery chargers maximize AC adapter and USB input power

High-performance 28-V Li-Ion chargers with dynamic input power management integrate multiple features in a 3 mm x 3 mm QFN
DALLAS (Nov. 24, 2008) -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) introduced today four 28-V, 1.5-A linear charge management ICs with integrated FETs aimed at smart phones and other portable electronics. The bq2407x family of lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery chargers allows an end-equipment to be powered directly from an external power source, even if the unit's battery pack is defective, fully discharged or absent. See: www.ti.com/bq24072-pr.

TI's new bq24072, bq24073, bq24074 and bq24075 chargers integrate a high number of features in a 3 mm x 3 mm QFN. The chargers incorporate a 28-V, 1.5-A input FET, a 5-A battery FET, current sensor, reverse blocking protection, thermal regulation and other battery management features. The devices support up to 1.5-A in charging mode and up to 5-A in discharge mode, which allows them to support higher currents from RF power amplifiers, such as those found in a GSM application.

The four bq2407x chargers also provide a unique power path management feature to simultaneously charge the battery and power the system. This reduces the number of charge and discharge cycles on the battery, enables proper charge termination and allows the system to turn on instantly, even if a battery is depleted. The battery charging rate is dynamically adjusted based on system voltage to ensure proper operation. Additionally, the battery can supplement the system's current requirements when an adapter cannot deliver the peak system currents, giving a designer the option of using a smaller adapter.

The bq2407x family offers an input voltage-based dynamic power management function in USB mode that monitors the input voltage and limits the input current if the input voltage drops below a preset value. This prevents the system from crashing USB sources that are incorrectly configured or poorly designed.

System protection and USB compliance

The bq2407x chargers support a high-input voltage rating of 28-V with a 6.6-V or 10.5-V over-voltage protection threshold, which allows a designer to select an inexpensive adapter to help lower system cost. The adapter input current limit is programmable with a resistor up to 1.5-A. In addition, the devices also comply with USB charging standards, such as USB-IF, by limiting the USB input current to 100 mA or 500 mA.

The devices charge the battery in three phases, including conditioning, constant current and constant voltage. System output voltage of the bq24072 automatically matches the battery's voltage. The bq24073 and bq24074 have a fixed output voltage of 4.4-V, while the bq24075 is set at 5.5-V. The bq24075 incorporates a battery SYSOFF function that disconnects the battery from the system, enabling a system with TI's bq27510 Impedance Track&#8482 battery fuel gauge (www.ti.com/bq27510) to measure open circuit voltage and predict remaining battery capacity.

Broad portfolio of battery management products

End applications in wireless, computing, consumer and industrial/medical markets continue to expand into the portable space. TI battery management solutions help address system protection, cost-effective linear and highly efficient switch-mode battery charging. With battery-powered systems demanding increased reliability, TI ensures maximum safety with protection circuits that protect systems from over-voltage and over-current conditions.

TI battery management solutions support a wide range of battery chemistries and cell counts, from popular Li-Ion technologies to nickel metal hydride and lead acid batteries.
